Jazz 2010-2011 roster

So lets go over this again. Jazz currently have seven players under contract. DWill, Miles, Price, Okur, Koufos, AK, Millsap. They will most certainly resign Matthews, that makes 8. The #9 pick makes the roster no matter what. That makes 9. Jazz have to start season with 13 contracts. Boozer seems gone. Jazz can resign Fes very cheap and can be cut at anytime with no huge loss. That makes 10. Resign Korver cheaper. He's still a good weapon at times. That makes 11. Jazz have to find two more players somehow to make 13. Maybe Gaines gets resigned for 12. Jazz still have to find another player somewhere. So Jazz could still pick up another first round pick. Could get very lucky at #55. Could get another high second round pick. Could sign a cheap FA. If they trade a two for one type deal they subtract another contract and need to find another player. Jazz standing pat with the #9 and getting very lucky at the #55 won't add enough players. They need to find a couple more decent players anyway you look at it.

I can do it even better by not just doing a long paragraph, but an extremely long sentence that goes into how the Jazz could not only use the money for the mid-level exception not spent on Wesley Matthews, but the bi-annual exception that the team will get as well, which can be spent on the free agents you may be looking for that include players like Zydrunas Ilgauskus, Sheldon Williams, D.J. Mbenga, and Kurt Thomas, but not Brendan Haywood who would probably be too expensive for the Jazz to sign with the remaining money to fill up the roster that will likely have to be filled by, as you say, undrafted free agents or trading for more players than they send our, or even buying some picks as has been speculated by not only users here on the site, but by national pundits that write, or more specifically or aptly put, type about the NBA and consider many types as ripe for taking picks off their hand.

*yeah, I went Hawthorne on your ***.

I dont see Kyle coming back I think a team like the spurs or something takes a look at him. We'll probably bring back Gaines unless we find a point in the draft that we like. Also othyus will probably play on the summer team so they can evaluate him a bit. The team could actually look very similar to last years minus boozer. Im hoping we get a bit more creative and bring in at least a couple of guys. Im curious to what exactly a player like randy foye will command. I think a combo guard is a need the jazz need to address.

FYI, Gaines and Jeffers are both under contract for next year, but not guaranteed. That give the Jazz the ability to look them over in the summer league without any other teams interfering. And perhaps even more importantly, it gives the Jazz the ability to include them in trades for salary matching purposes, but then the other team can waive them at no cost.

It was reported a few places, but here's one example:

That doesn't mean those two players will be here next year, but they are still technically under contract for 2010-2011.

#10 is a joke. Korver will not be cheaper he is going to get MLE money most likely.
#9 I'm not sure Fess is going to be all that cheap. Probably 1.5-3M a year.
Resigning Mathews is far from a forgone conclusion. I believe he is restricted but do they really want to give him MLE money that will cost twice that? I hope he comes in much cheaper than that but it's not guaranteed by any means.

1. I agree with you re: Korver. He's probably NOT coming back. Matthews and CJ have taken over his role as late-game 3-pt shooters. Jazz would be better of saving $4-$5M and signing a rookie to develop - preferably an upgrade at PG. Or take the MLE and sign a big SF. CJ can back up Matthews at PG. Yes, I know the position is interchangeable in the Jazz offense. But it certainly isn't on defense. Jazz need size at the 3 (assuming - and hoping - AK will be gone at the deadline or after this season).

2. Even at $3M, that's CHEAP for Fes. Have you seen what a lot of BACKUP centers around the league make? And with Okur hurting, Fes WILL be back.

3. Same with Matthews. If he received an offer for the MLE, I'd match it in a heartbeat. Wesley is a STARTING SG and a pretty decent one at that. He has a TON of upside. Already a decent shooter, and played pretty good defense as a ROOKIE. He's only going to get better. I'd try to sign him for the type of contract CJ received.

4. Who gives a rat's $#^ about Gaines and Jeffers? They're apparently nice guys. But Gaines can't shoot. OK, he made one BIG 3, but ended up 46%/27% and 50% from the line. Jeffers is a 6'5" forward. If you need to fill out your roster to 13, bring them back. If the 2nd-round pick or an undrafted player looks better, then sayonara.

What the Jazz need to do is upgrade their "core." By that, I mean the top-8 players. You have your starting 5, then a couple of bigs and a combo guard. Or perhaps nine: a backup center, combo forward and a couple of guards. The remaining players are fillers.

IMO, Deron, Matthews, Millsap and CJ can all be core players. Deron, of course is a superstar. The other three are 2nd-tier starters or great backups. And all give good production for what they're paid. AK? Not enough bang for the buck. Boozer? $15M/per will be too much for a one-dimensional player. Okur? Overpaid (but almost all centers are). Korver? Not enough game to justify $5M.

What I'm hoping to see happen is that the Jazz get a starter with the #9 pick, then pick up 2 more core players with AK's $17M (hopefully a starter and a decent backup). Of course, if the Jazz could also trade for a pick in the 20's or get a decent player via a sign-and-trade for Boozer, that would really help.

Utah has some definite rebuilding to do. But, it can be accomplished while also remaining competitive. I hope KOC is burning up the phones trying to get some deals done.
