Here's a more detailed press release about the hire:

It almost seems that the Jazz went to a flea market and hired the cheapest temporary coach they could find to help the rooks and sophs develop during a shortened season. The dude can't seem to stay at one place for more than a couple of years. How long will he stay with the Jazz? Now granted the guy is like 51 years old, so he may just retire with the Jazz, but why could he not stay at one place?

Also, he's not a center or a power forward or anything. Yet he will be teaching the bigs how to play? Well I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, you don't have to be good at something to teach someone else, just look at Scott Layden, I'm pretty sure he hasn't played any basketball of note, yet he's been an NBA exec/coach for years.

My end analyses is that he will be helpful to have around to help the young players develop, and he has plenty of experience in plenty of systems. Not worried about it.

The news sent shockwaves through the Fort Wayne Mad Ants organization.

Coaching and playing are two different things. I'm pretty sure Sloan was never a PG or PF yet he still managed to be great at teaching both positions.

Wow, the Jazz new head coach who was a journeyman player who got traded or moved alot, and had to fight for a roster spot every year hired a former journeyman player who got traded or moved alot, and had to fight for a roster spot every year.

I like it. It sounds like he is Ty's pick. Coach Corbin needs to have his guys around him as he works to establish an identity.

I was hoping for Pete Maravich.

Oh wait.

Give him time. I recall the Mavs hiring that dude (I think he was a farmer) who sent in a videotape about the 91 (or some crazy high number) things one needs to consider when shooting free throws and the guy could hit a ton ina row hmself I think. The next year the Mavs free throw shooting, which had been abysmal went from like 68% as a team to like 78% or something. In short, you don't have to have done in order to teach. Or something.

Yes, you may have all the knowledge in the world, but not be able to put it into action yourself (most coaches). And you may have all the ability (and knowledge) in the world, but not be able to pass it on to others and communicate it effectively.
