"Jazz free agent forward Josh Howard expected to make a decision soon, source tell Y! Sports. Utah, IND, GS, BK and NY in mix."

WHY? WHY? WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

As @SpearsNBAYahoo reported, #UtahJazz still in play for UFA forward Josh Howard. League source says Howard has narrowed options down to 4-5 teams, with Jazz still near top of his list for desired destinations. Signing isn't imminent and Howard is still "going through the process," source said. While Jazz are stacked at 3-5, Howard's still very open to re-signing with Utah. Feels loyal to organization.

As much as I want to puke at the idea, here's what I'm thinking would be good if we got another SF:

Starters-
Mo
Hayward
Marvin
Favors
Al

Bench-
Foye
Burks
Howard
Paul
Kanter

I think it's really important Hayward and Marvin get the start and in order for that to happen, Carrolle, Jeremy Evans, or Howard has to be our 3. Hayward and Marvin playing more than 30 minutes gets us the hieght and athleticsm advantage almost every night.

The real question is: Howard or Carrolle?

EDIT: I must have been high when I posted this. Josh Howard sucks.

If they hadn't acquired Marvin, I'd be on it like a hobo on a ham sandwich. But I just don't think there's room for him here, barring injury or trade.

Eh if you can get him for near the minimum and he doesn't eat into Hayward or Williams minutes is it really that awful?

Uh yes. Please figure out a minutes distribution for Mo, Tinsley, Watson, Murphy, Burks, Foye, Hayward, Williams, Carroll, and Howard. Hell, take our points, Murphy and Carroll out of the equation and find one for just Burks, Foye, Hayward, Williams and Howard at the 2/3. 96/5 = 19.2 minutes per game. Hell, even if Burks get 8 minutes a game backing up Mo at the point and only another 8 minutes a game at the 2, that's still only 22 minutes a game for the other four guys. That math ain't cuttin' it and no one will be happy with Burks only getting 16 mpg this year.

Problem is he WILL eat into someones minutes if we do get him

carroll is not better than howard in absolute terms... but they're different, and part of the way they're different is that howard needs the ball in his hands to be effective. that and the fact that carroll is more likely to be fine with his ideal role of 5th wing.

our wing rotation right now is gordon-marvin-burks-foye, with carroll and murphy for deep bench. that's not a bad rotation, particularly if hayward takes another step this year and if marvin revives his potential even half as much as people here seem to think he automatically will. if someone were available who is a clear upgrade over that rotation, i'd do it, but howard isn't that upgrade.

I see no reason to re-sign Howard. With the addition of Foye and Williams there will be little need for him. Foye takes away minutes from Hayward at the SG position. Gordon will have to play minutes at the SF. Bringing back Howard also makes the chance of K. Murphy making the team. I like enough about Murphy that I would rather sign him (cheapier and won't demand minutes). Howard played well before his injury but after he was just looking for his own stats by chucking up bad shots. With his injury history, I would think the Jazz wouldn't want him back.

I am against signing him at any cost. We don't need him and don't have room for him. If he was guaranteed to be our 5th wing I might be okay with it. But what are the odds of him getting and accepting that role? Hell I'm not sure that Carrolle is not just plain better for this team than him. At least with Carrolle he plays defense and does not chuck every chance he gets.

I really doubt there is any room on this roster for Murphy. And that's how it should be. He's a late 2nd round pick. If you are taking a guy that late he should be a long shot to make the roster. If he wows in camp they can always cut Tinsley, Watson, Evans, or Carrolle.

Or they could just not resign his worthless ***.... I never saw us being a better team with him on the floor.

No, but he will eat into minutes. Howard will not be signing up for a bunch of DNP's. There's enough depth even if someone goes down.
96 mins = 3*32 (Williams, Hayward, Burks). Having Foyle means reducing mins for Marvin and Alec (for example, Hayward at 30, Marvin at 25, Alec at 21, Foyle at 20). And we're not even counting garbage mins for Carroll or Murphy. Beyond that, Millsap could also play some SF to give the bigs more minutes. And Mo could also play SG in a small line-up, allowing more time for Tinsley and Watson (in the case of a couple of players being hurt).

If anybody here thinks that if we sign him for the minimum and he won't steal minutes from our young exciting players, then step forward now.

And get a huge mushroom tat across the face.
