Kanter's Potential

Big kid who plays a punishing style and can also shoot? We got room for that. If he turns out to be a 4, so be it. His height is not an issue for me.

Well I was on the Knight bandwagon so I guess I'm okay.

Talent and power is far more useful than an inch or two

I'll admit it, I was on the "Draft Kanter" bandwagon, but I am scared to death to see him play in an NBA game. If the guy isn't tall enough to be a center, and his future is at the 4 spot, why did we draft him. Seeing some of the media day photos, it looks like Okur, Jefferson, and Favors all towered over him. Man, I hope we didn't blow the third pick.

I've always said that we should play him at PF and Favors at C.

Reasons for playing Kanter at PF:
- He's quick enough to guard most PF
- He will be big enough to back down PF
- He's just not tall enough to guard C or just don't have the vertical leap to do so
- He's more of an offensive player - which suits the PF position more

Reasons for playing Favors at C:
- He's just tall enough to play C (look at media day photo of him and Jeffrson, he's a good inch taller)
- He has that vertical jump/leaping ability to block shots
- He's more of a defensive player (for now), which suits the C position more

They always say the position you play in the NBA is the position you can guard. I believe Kanter can guard NBA PF and Favors can guard NBA C - but not the other way round.

I'm definitely not putting all my eggs in the Kanter basket. I think he's somewhere between Hoffa and Zach Randolph.

That's a pretty big range to put it mildly. I'm hoping he's more Zach, but, he could easily be more Hoffa.

Making matters worse, I don't anticipate he'll see teh floor much this year. So, if he looks good or looks bad in those 10mpg folks will assume he's a bust. I think it's going to be a trying year for him.

Well, he has a 9'1.5" standing reach. Favors is only 9'2". I'm not sure that 1/2 inch is the determining factor. His athleticism might be though. From what I understand, anything above 9' is pretty good to play the center position. I agree that it's all about what position you can guard, but I think that applies less to bigs than it does to wings and points. How many truly good offensive centers do we have in the NBA right now that are considerably taller or longer than Kanter?

-Dwight Howard
-Nene (not sure he's much taller or longer than Kanter)
-The Gasol Brothers
-Bynum
-Andrew Bogut

That's really all I could come up with. There just are not very many 7-footers that are quality offensive players. I would be more concerned with Kanter protecting the rim and rebounding than being able to guard the center position.

Yeah that's exactly my point - I think as a C you're required to be more of an defensive force, hence, I thought Favors would be able to do a better job there. Whereas if you're a PF, you're counted on to score more (Boozer, Randolph, Garnett, Stoudamire, Bosh, Aldridge, etc, etc, etc). So let Kanter thrive in that.

Horses for courses is what I'm saying.

I don't think anyone should be expecting Kanter to become an elite center, but if he can turn into a Kevin Willis-type bigman (which imo is his ceilling) I will be more than satisfied. Fans just need to be patient - the guy hasn't even played a single minute in the NBA yet.

If Kanter measured 6-9 3/4 w/out shoes at the predraft camp then either their measurements are off or he's a legit 6-11.
6-11 w/a 7-1 WS and 9-1 SR isn't elite size/length, but it's certainly not undersized and when you add it to the combination of physicality and skill he has, Kanter certainly has the potential to become one of the better centers in the league.

We know what he measured, now we need to see how big he plays, although personally I could care less about the "how tall he appears to be at media day" factor.

He's got serious width as well as reach. If he's quick as some here are noting, height won't be a problem as long as he plays smart and stays away from those silly fouls.

Go back and look at those Getty Media Day photos an earlier post linked to. See photo 135403911 -- Kanter's just a bit taller than Big Al, just like the official measurements would lead us to believe.

I'm willing to wager a healthy sum that Kanter plays bigger than his measurements. Sure, he's a PF/C, and everybody should have known that already.

Whether Kanter is 6'11" or a little under is going to be moot soon. I think Favors establishes himself as the starting center by all star break and Al gets shipped to a playoff team.

I feel bad for kanter because he has said he wants to win ROY. No chance. He will never get enough minutes.

My pick for ROY is DWILL 2.0

Pictures can be decieving. Okur is closer to the photographer. Notice how the top of the picture is cropped to Okur's height, making him appear taller than Kanter, but then the basketball Okur is holding also appears to be bigger than the one Kanter is holding. Illusion.

Oh boy.. where do I start?

Obviously it's not "that" exact photo that they're looking at. The article talks about a number of "head on" photos?

For example, here's one with Burks showing Kanter only a few inch taller than Burks who's 6'6:

etc, etc, etc..
