Even before he came onto the court tonight and had a bigger impact than anyone else on the team, he's been a consummate professional. I haven't heard an utterance of displeasure of his lack of minutes, nor have I seen him be anything but supportive and engaged. He's the first off the bench at timeouts, you can see him talking to guys with frequency in what appears to be in the form of tutelage.

When you have a team where the talent is increasingly trending younger and a rebuild is already in progress or seemingly inevitable, there's a very specific role that players over the hill play and should be kept around if they do it: Be a worthwhile mentor. Essentially be the guy that Tinsley's been; supportive, makes other players better, ready to step up and teach whenever an opportunity is presented, not demanding but always ready to play.

Unless the Jazz are getting an offer that blows them away, you keep Tinsley until at least the end of this season. Wayne Ellington is not that offer that blows you away.

I never thought I'd say this, but I love Jamaal Tinsley and he's probably been the best (or second best) veteran playing the veteran role on this team. That's worth more than a few hundred k.

I agree 100 percent. I was a big supporter of his basketball talent and defended the decision to bring him in. I am however even surprised by how much of a professional he is. Kanter has mentioned him as the main vet who works with him. The guy knows how to run a team too. Besides the fact the Jazz have needed him because both Harris and Earl have gotten hurt.

to be honest i knew very little about him, besides that he had some quarrels in indiana. Thus far, i agree with OP.

After watching last night I'm wondering why he's rotting on the bench for. He's clearly the best playmaker on the team, and it's not even close!

I agree, 100%, with this post. I'll have to catch you on the rep flip side.

I agree. I love Earl, but him being out will give Tinsley some time to shine & he deserves that. He has been very professional and positive, and I hope they keep him here.

The thing that makes this so interesting is that he was such a piece of garbage and not very long ago*. I HATED this signing when it went down. But there's probably something to be said for someone that seems to have been forced to grow up. His advice means something because he knows where the wrong ones have lead him.

*There were reports that he assaulted a worker at a strip club for trying to stop someone from stealing coats, he did SOMETHING that forced the Pacers to BAN HIM FROM TEAM FACILITIES ALTOGETHER (I can't recall any instances of something like this happening to anyone) through the end of his contract (it had three years remaining, he finally got bought out because of pressure from the NBPA). I know quite a few people from Indiana, and the name "Jamaal Tinsley" is a punchline.

The thing is, right now teams aren't scouting for him, they don't even expect him to play. He has played great in the few games he's gotten minutes. The Jazz should really play him more consistently to give them idea what his long term consistency will be like.

Not to make excuses for the guy but he grew up in the absolute a-hole of NYC in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Most of his childhood friends are probably either dead or in jail. It probably took him a little longer than most to learn what he had and how much he had to lose before he did some growing up. But apparently he has and we should just move on from here.

Tinsley is the best pure point guard on this team. In fact he is the only pure point guard. He doesn't give you the toughness attitude that Watson exudes, but he can score ball and would average 10 assists given playing time.
