SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Orange County, California’s Board of Supervisors voted to declare August 24, Kobe Bryant Day. The late Los Angeles Lakers guard wore numbers 8 and 24 during his career.
Bryant, along with his 13-year old daughter Gianna, and seven others were killed when the helicopter they were flying in crashed into the California mountainside.
According to CNN, Michelle Steele, the leader of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, and a long time Laker fan said the board wanted to recognize the hard work of Bryant as a member of the community.
“I’m proposing August 24 to be dedicated to the memory of Kobe Bryant, and all that he brought to Orange County community, ” Steel said.
“The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do.”
Bryant, a five-time champion and 18-time All-Star is widely recognized as one of the greatest players in NBA history. The Lakers guard spent 20 seasons in the NBA, all of them in Los Angeles. The board does have any events set up to celebrate Kobe Bryant Day.
The guard was set to be enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame later this month. However, the coronavirus pandemic forced the postponement of the event. No rescheduled date has been set.
