which players are true contenders at their respective position .. which should be a back up?

PG) We have nothing. Harris is a stopgap PG, and won't accept a backup role. Could be an okay 5th option on certain teams, but not the Jazz.
SG) I quite fancy Gordon Hayward at the two. Him and Alec Burks splitting time at the 2/3 makes a very competent wing combination, in my opinion (if they acclimate to their potential). Im pulling for something akin to Hamilton/Prince.
SF) .......Tricky. Hayward can play spot minutes as a backup SF. However, we have no player that can properly defend other teams more talented SFs, presuming that Millsap retains his current build. Another massive gap in our rotation
PF) DFav.....what more can I say? Potential top 3 PF.
C) Kanter: Wild-card. I can see him being a contender.

So, though we do have some seriously awesome pieces in our lineup, we also have some clear gaps. Fortunately, we also have a ****load of cap room coming up. Hopefully, we can fill up the PG hole via FA, and draft a stud SF. That'd be the route that Id take. Sign Nash, reach on an SF like Darius Miller, or Quincy Miller. Man, I wish we had the Golden State pick :(

I admit this was a thread fail.

Everyone that says the same from this point fwd can suck trout.

Good post, Dala .. thanks! ;)

Dear Sir,

I'd like to participate in your poll. My lineup suggestion would be as follows:

Devin Harris
Raja Bell
Josh Howard
Paul Millsap
Al Jefferson

None of the young players are ready for extended minutes, they need to sit on the bench for another 3-4 years and learn from the veteran players with playoff experience.

Sincerely,
Ty Corbin

P.S. This is a cool thread.

I think The Four all have the potential to be pieces you can build around for a championship. It's really early to say this about Burks or Kanter though.

Milsap as a 6th man is championship team worthy. Hell, a rotation of Milsap, Favors, and Kanter is a real good bigs rotation.
I also like Tinsley a lot as veteran leadership. His role would be similar to Derick Fisher's in the Laker's championship run.

To me, Burks has the farthest to go to being a regular contributor/good starter. He's very talented, but plays out of control, frequently plays out of the offense, and sometimes reminds me of CJ but addicted to driving.

I obviously think he can improve a ton (and hopefully will!), but I think it's going to be a couple of years before we really know what we have with him. I think he could end up as a SG Rudy Gay type player, but could easily also end up as one of those guys who puts up numbers on a bad team (JR Smith, someone like that, or even worse)

Not a fail. I've been thinking about pretty much the same thing lately. I'd love to hear what people think about the future of this team, especially those who think we are so set, that we don't need to add any more young talent. Personally, I feel pretty good about Favors and Hayward as starters going forward, and that's it. I'd like to add Millsap to that, but he is a question mark for me, due to his contract status. I'd prefer to move Al, but for those people who want to keep him around, he also has to be considered a question mark because of contract status. I have high hopes for Kanter and Burks, but both of those guys are still question marks as to just how much they will contribute, as well as how soon.

So yeah, Favors and Hayward are the only two starters I'm really confident in moving forward. I certainly hope for Kanter and Burks to become legit starters, but I think it's a bit nutty for people to think we can just assume those guys will automatically turn into starters, to the point that we shouldn't add any more youth.

You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later.

Favors is the only clear one.

Something still tells me Hayward might be a better 6th man than starter, same with Millsap.

Can't really say on Burks or Kanter yet.

Jefferson could if you build the team perfectly to compliment him.

wtf would that team look like, exactly? Lemme guess, 4 passers and Al?

A defensive stud, someone like Favors actually.
A very good shooting SF or SG.
A very good playmaking SF or SG, who can also shoot decently.
A very good shooting PG.

Basically Orlando, but instead of a stretch 4, a defensive four (or 5 if they are athletic like a Chandler). Also don't overpay crappy players like Arenas, Lewis, and Hedo.

Don't know if this team is legit contender, but Orlando did got to the finals with this formula.

Okay, seriously. What is Al good for if you're not just giving him the ball for him to shoot it? WHy have all these other guys as you've outlined? Face it, Al is an offensive juggernaut on an offensively challenged team .. otherwise, he's pretty useless.

okay that was harsh .. almost useless.

I think what he his hinting towards is the fact that Al always attracts a double. If you pull a man off of 4 well shooting players, someone is going to be open for three every given time.

If the Jazz Had Howard averaging ~35% and Hayward averaging ~42% from three this year, we would've locked up a much higher seeding spot. Note how our team began surging late in the season, once Devin started hitting his threes. Al would bring in the double, Devin would drop the three, the paint would open up.

So yes, I agree with Cyrone in terms that Al could be decently functional in "his perfect team". Unfortunately for him and us, this Jazz team isn't anywhere close to that. This might be a stretch but offensively, a team like Golden State could be functional with Al at the 5, and Lee playing Hi/Lo with Jefferdad (among several long-range shooters like Curry, Rush, Thomspon, et al.). It would also be the biggest defensive joke in the NBA. So although I am not as negative on him as some, I still want him to be traded. It just doesn't seem like a good fit.
