NBA Player Defensive Ratings (PG and SG)

Since I posted the thread on Al Jefferson's defensive stats, there was some discussion of how to rank a defensive player. Kelly Scaletta (pretty good writer even though it's Bleacher Report) has done a study on the best defensive PG's and SG's through an elaborate statistics model, trying to take into account as many variables as possible. Take a look at his results. He plans to do this for all positions, so expect three more articles. Read some of the comments below on his article if you have questions. Doesn't look good for the Jazz so far.

PG's:https://bleacherreport.com/articles/813678-nba-power-rankings-defensively-ranking-every-starting-point-guard-in-the-nba

SG's: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/816483-nba-power-rankings-ranking-the-starting-shooting-guard-for-every-nba-team

Very interesting and well written articles. Thanks for posting.

Defense is the main reason I don't think the Jazz will be in the playoffs next season. Which I'm fine with (it's the perfect time to be in the lottery since 2012 could turn out to be the deepest draft in recent memory.)

I found it fascinating, even if there are things to disagree with. Gotta give him props for using the Synergy data, both statistically and visually, and really trying to figure out what causes success or failure. Really interesting point that the guys who give their all not to get beat on drives are often not as effective as those who get beat occasionally but are better at challenging jump shots.

Bleacher report?

lol didn't read.

It doesn't matter if your chihuahua wrote the article if his logic is sound and his research of high-quality; that's all that should matter. Your own mental capacities should determine the veracity and quality of the article--not strictly its provenance. ESPN articles are often way worse and biased than this article. Should we all just read articles from ESPN and believe everything they say. You would read an ESPN article critically, right? Same goes here as the few above have found out for themselves. But it's your call of course.

I'm not saying this article is bad. I'm just saying I don't read Bleacher Report because of the bad ones I've read in the past, like ones written by 14 year old boys.

Fair enough. He does happen to be a featured writer. But no biggie.

I enjoyed the article. While I do enjoy some deep analysis, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happy to have some of my own relevant opinions propped up (Deron is a better defender than he's ever given credit for, Harris is not very good at anything besides kamikazes to the hoop).

I always thought everyone here appreciated Dwill's defense. He had some minor problems against speedy guards, but he did very well for the most part. I think it was just the past year everyone started ******** on his D.

I liked where DW and CP both were listed -- maybe not quite at the elite defense level cited elsewhere. Deron put in effort sometimes but held serve at best most of the time.

Also (with Tony Allen's ranking), further fodder for why I think that the Jazz should've gone after Tom Thibodeau 2 or 3 years ago.

Maybe they did, but loyalty to Sloan (despite stagnant performance) rather than candidates' willingness to come to Utah seemed to predominate the decision by the Jazz. This theory is further supported by the loyalty exacted by hiring from within (at a relatively affordable price, btw) following Sloan's abrupt tractor ride into the sunset.

I was a little livid with how they gave Corbin a multiple year contract without seeing what he could do. Can you imagine if we would have gotten Thibodeau? I hope Corbin brings in some new perspective, i.e., a new coach, for the defensive end. I've also thought about Matt Harpring as a defensive coach. At least he would bring a fearless attitude to the players and wouldn't pull punches with players who put forth horrendous defensive effort.

Could you imagine Thibodeau turning down a HC job with The Chicago Bulls for the Utah Jazz? You could, but no way in hell would it happen. I like the idea of giving an in-house guy a shot. Not just signing a big time coach who will leave in 3-5 years.

Thibodeau went to coach the Bulls because they were the first team to give him an official offer as far as I know. He had been searching for a HC job for a couple of years before the Bulls made the best decision since Phil Jackson.

But there's no way the Jazz would've let Sloan go if he wasn't ready to. Absolutely no way, even if it's clear as crystal that they probably should've a while ago.
