What's new

NBA Playoff format changed

It's a step in the right direction and all we can hope for for now.

Best that could be pushed through. I'm not sure they'd have the support to get rid of conferences. It would require a major upheaval in scheduling.

Just have your normal conferences during regular season and get rid of it during the playoffs. What's wrong with that? Then we wouldn't have Spurs vs Clippers in the first round like this past playoffs...

We'll also get lots more interesting match-ups. Like a potential first round match-up between Lakers and Knicks,.. don't you think that would set the ratings on fire??????

Neither will be there in the foreseeable future. Lol!

I suggested it in another thread, but I think a good hybrid would be top 6 per conference play within the conference and then the bottom four playoff spots are open regardless of conference.

I think it needs to be simple enough a system to be workable... when it's too complicated casual fans get confused and give up trying to understand.

Seriously, what would be the problem with getting rid of conferences in the playoffs? Rank teams 1-16 and have at it.

I want this but I have heard that travel could be an issue

Yeah that's why restricting it to the playoffs would work because you play twice then you fly. There's plenty of rest time and it wouldn't favour one team over the other.

These day and age with charter flights it's very doable.

Says the guy who doesn't have to do it. A system like this could become an advantage for teams in the middle of the country who are less likely to have long trips every series. Lots of long flights can wreak havoc on your internal clock.

Well I dunno I've never had the chance to fly charter before... I got bumped to Business class a few months back on a 12 hour flight and there was a night & day difference between economy and business I can tell you... I actually didn't want the flight to end, I didn't want to leave the aircraft it was just that comfortable.

Now I don't know how business class compares to charter flights but I would assume that they're pretty similar... what I would do is just go to sleep straight after boarding, get a good 5-6 hour sleep in. During the playoffs you get a few off days between games anyway so it's not like you're playing straight away, you'll get at least a 24 hour break before playing your next game.

I dunno.. gotta ask the players how they feel about it I guess but again let me emphasise, we're not talking regular season here, we're talking bout the playoffs.

May be somebody who has flew charter before can chime in here about how comfortable it is and do you still get jet lags, etc? PKM? Moe?

It's more comfortable with more space and easier flight schedules, but it is tiring nonetheless. I've traveled many different ways and my experience has been that when you do a lot it wears on you. Also, while the team gets to travel by charter there are a lot of other people who have to go back and forth in coach. The bottom line is that the logistics of numerous cross-country playoff series are no where near as simple as you're making them out to be.
