Nintendo announced today that they will be showcasing their new console to be released in 2012. I know we have some closet Nintendo fans here!

"We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles," the company said in a brief statement. Nintendo did not reveal any additional details.

Multiple sources tell IGN the console - dubbed Project Cafe - will be "significantly more powerful" than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and be backwards compatible with current Wii software. The console will also utilize a new, tablet-shaped controller. Sources say it will have a 6-inch touch screen display, dual analog sticks, and has the ability to stream content directly from the console.

When did it become a requirement to hate other machines simply by owning a competing one? I own a PS3 but still like Xbox & Wii. Does that make me weird?

That's the problems w/Nintendo... Their newest console is about to be more powerful than a PS3 and XBOX 360.

As if PS3 and XBOX aren't developing console's that will be more powerful than their current technology.

I personally like Nintendo's games. They're fun. But those graphics are hellish awful. I couldn't tell whether I was playing Super Mario World on SNES or Galaxy on the WII. And just forget the sports games (I swear NBA Jam of the 90s has graphics just as good as the newest NBA LIVE crap for the WII).

Perhaps Nintendo shouldn't be aiming to have technology that is better than current technology. Perhaps they should aim higher. Like a console that is more powerful than a PS4.

This is no longer a surprise. No one releases anything new without it being "lightyears" better than anything else out there. Does anyone ever expect a press release like this?

Multiple sources tell IGN the console - dubbed Project Mediocrity - will be "almost as powerful" as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, maybe a little less, and be pretty much able to play only new games that aren't all that interesting or updated from what they have done all along. The console will also utilize pretty much the same controllers, maybe with different stickers or shaped differently. Sources say it will have a few new buttons, with a change from an A/B format to maybe an X/Y format. All in all it is anticipated to do a decent job of maintaining the status quo.

That said, it does look pretty cool. But I agree with the whole Mario Party comment. Wii games are so limited it gets boring pretty fast. Hopefully they can do a better job of getting software to support a cool new platform.

I own all three and the wii might has well be a paper weight. Nintendo will never have 3rd party support. I also think it is early for a new system, considering the economy and games on the current system have not even peaked as far as graphical power goes. This system will fail hard.

Uh...that's pretty bad hyperbole there. You are awarded no points.

I heard from a good source that new WIII is going to take over the PC market before smartphones do.
You will be able to do anything from the Wheee.

Nintendo is going to have to do something really special because they dropped the ball with the Wii and ruined their reputation.

Not sure how they ruined their reputation. With whom? Hardcore gamers? Because outside of that small niche of people, most people love the Wii. Check out the sales of each console from Wikipedia:

Worldwide sales figures
Wii – 86.01 million as of 31 March 2011
Xbox 360 – 50 million as of 6 January 2011
PlayStation 3 – 50 million as of 15 April 2011

The Wii opened the door for "non-gamers" to enjoy video games and they somehow ruined their reputation? Do you think Xbox Kinect would exist if the Wii was never invented?

As someone who owns an Xbox 360 and a Wii, and has been playing video games for about 20 year, I will say that the Wii has produced some of the best games I have ever played: The two Mario Galaxy games, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart Wii, Zelda Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Golden Eye 007, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Super Paper Mario, MLB Power Pros.

Can't wait to see how they are going to revolutionize the industry this time around.

I liked most of these games too, but seriously after a few hoursof playing them call of duty or Killzone give a different kind of itch and just make you forget about the wii games and I never go back to play them. My POV.

So you're a first-person shooter whore, then.

I get that "itch" feeling as well for Halo and COD. For me it stems from the online component of those games. That is one area that Nintendo needs to fix!

So I have just been looking over the E3 stuff today since I'm sort of a has been video game player that only dabbles now....is anybody actually excited about this after getting a little more info?

That and the new Zelda look super weak to me. Nintendo sucks now.

It's funny, they're trying to be the apple of the console world.
