i just don't buy that he's "too old" for anything. most NBA players hit their prime in their late 20s/early 30s. devin is just heading into that phase, which means in all likelihood he's going to get better before he starts getting worse.
In all likelihood? What players get better after 28 years old (besides maybe superstars)? When you look at his career, he very steadily rose to his peak two years ago and has been steadily descending since. He's not exactly an iron-man either, and again, he draws his entire game from his speed than from his strength or skill (things that don't age).
that doesn't mean he carries the jazz to a title,
Isn't that the ultimate goal?
but it means he's got a better chance of helping the jazz stay relevant in the short term than some kid who gets drafted in the back third of a weak draft round. if darius effing morris is the jazz's starting PG they're going to win 20 games, and none of the young guys will learn anything from being a part of a team that sucky.
Players only learn from winning? What's in Devin Harris' resume that makes him a difference in that regard anyway? When he left Dallas, they got a little worse and then a whole lot better, and his experience with New Jersey was the total opposite (they got a little better, and then unbelievably worse [you know he's already been the SECOND-best player on one of the worst teams in NBA history, right?]). I've never heard of him described as a leader or heady player by anyone. Besides, it wouldn't kill the Jazz to get another good pick in what is touted as one of the stronger drafts in recent memory.
if we could replace devin tomorrow with someone more capable of being both the short AND long term answer, then go ahead... but we can't, so you have to recognize that rebuilding doesn't happen overnight and that devin is a damn capable guy for the next phase of this effort.
Don't pretend like the highlighted hasn't been the base of my entire ****ing point. Maybe Devin Harris does what most players don't and becomes a capable shooter late in his career all of a sudden (Jason Kidd is an exception that proves the rule), that would go a long way. Maybe he stops getting injured all of the time from running really fast (won't age well) and/or plowing into defenses (also doesn't age well). Maybe a lot of ****. I just don't think the smart money is moving into a rebuild with a guy that will be tickling 30 before we really even get started. I think it's fantasy to deem that wise.
But we obviously don't agree. Good talk.
P.S. I don't hate Devin Harris as a person or a player. I think he's good. I just don't see how the timeline with him works here. I also don't see how he works with Al or Kanter (if the Jazz pick him and he projects to be the player that he could).
