Obama's Vice President Choice

There's a lot of speculation swirling around out there that Obama is ready to jettison Biden and tap Hillary to run as VP. In the Romney thread there were quite a few poster here that felt the VP choice did not matter. What do you think of Obama getting rid of Biden? Does it matter?

I think it could provide a huge push for Obama if timed properly. Biden is such a f'n tool.

I don't think it matters all that much, unless you royally screw up your choice (like choosing Palin) or you get a name that really holds weight. I think Clinton might fit the latter description, but I don't think VP selection is going to win/lose anyone the race this year.

Palin wasn't the one who was the wrong choice for that ticket. She actually energized the ticket when it was a heartbeat away from death.

She energized it into a joke.

As I recall, the last time a VP candidate was replaced was 1972. It did not seem to help McGovern in any way.

REplacing biden would lose more support than any other nominee could pick up, IMHO.

Apparently Obama asked, Hillary declined and said get ready for me in '16.

Makes no sense to me. It doesn't matter who wins this election, the economic tail wind will be behind the president. If she were Obama's veep then she could run in 016 on some kind of "see it works" platform. She'll have a hard time beating an incumbent republican pushing that same message, and will have stiff competition with Obama's new veep pushing that message (assuming it won't be Biden again).

That makes no sense. The VP slot is a much cushier job than Secretary of State, and it gives you the edge in running for the nomination. Who was the last sitting VP that ran and did not secure his party's nomination?

[Wiki research]

Alben Barkley lost, but didn't declare his candidacy until July 6 of 1952.

So, you have to go back to Thomas Marshall in 1920.

If Clintion wanted to be President, she would jump at the chance to be VP.

Aren't you assuming here? If Romney wins, Hillary's decision will be the better option.

Yeah, a big help.
Mondale was defeated in a landslide by President Reagan, gaining electoral votes from only his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia.

Since I was referring to the party's nomination, and not the general election, why do you think this is relevant?

Having been a VP gave Mondale a sizeable leg up in getting the nomination.
