Old Draft News RE Gordon

I was thinking, and I didn't see anyone mention this, but everyone knew the Jazz liked and were taking Gordon, and the speculation was that the Magic were taking a PG, either Exum or Smart. Do you think the Magic took Gordon because they thought they could make a deal with the Jazz and get Exum or Smart, who were the next logical picks, plus another asset from the Jazz for Gordon? Obviously, if they tried, the Jazz refused.

NO

That would be an incredibly dumb thing for them to do. If they wanted assets they would have traded back. They obviously had Gordon above Exum and Smart on their big board.

They would've called the jazz before their pick and said hey we are drafting gordon, do you want to trade us for him? We said no.

I think the Magic drafting Gordon had more to due with them liking Payton than it did having Gordon much higher than exum or smart. I think they probably had the 3 pretty closely ranked, but Payton wasn't far behind, and they knew he would be available at 10. They probably had the trade with Philly in place before the draft.

This.

They simply like Gordon and Payton more than Exum and whoever was available at #12.

I find this to be even more ridiculous.

They did not have Payton ranked with Exum and Smart. They picked Payton because they liked Gordon. They didn't pick Gordon because they liked Payton. You pick your top talent first.

More ridiculous than drafting a player you don't want in hopes that the team after you wants him and will draft the player you want then trade him to you? Like I said, they like Gordon, but it was probably close between him, exum and smart. Saying that Payton had sothing to do with them picking Gordon over 2 the other PG's isn't that ridiculous.
