OMG! Calipari would choose Kanter over Knight

So much for the debate about who the Jazz should select if the choice is Knight or Kanter. Coach Calipari just said if he had the number one choice he would select Kanter. To me the coach that watched both these players practice has more insight than almost anyone else.

Are you aware of Calipari's success in the NBA? Why would you look at him for discussion on who will be a better NBA player?

To those on the pro-Kanter side, this is a valid endorsement. To those on the anti-Kanter side, this is easily disregarded. tantamount to "oh yeah, Well Coach Cal is stupid." If Cal had gone with Knight it'd be the other way 'round.

So what you are saying is that, simply because he hasn't coached a great team, YOUR opinion about the future of an NBA prospect > Calipari's? How many championship NBA teams have you coached recently? If the answer is none then Calipari and you are at least even in that regard. I think Calipari's take is a valid one and speaks to the mocks we see where Kanter is almost always listed ahead of Knight.

Yeah, this guy named Derrick Rose really sucks.

I bet the Bulls are hoping to unload him this off season so they can play Boozer (the real leader) more.

John Wall, Bledsoe, and DeMarcus Cousins all suck too.

Calipari has no idea about talent.

Kentucky should hurry up and fire him so they can hire Jim Boylen.

Uh. Please quote the part in my post where I gave an opinion on the future of an NBA prospect.

I think it's the old adage of placing more value on bigger players. "If you're going to make a mistake, make a 'big' one" is the adage. It's that line of thinking that had Jordan going after Bowie and CP3 and Deron drafted after Bogut and Marvin Williams. I'm not saying Knight is Jordan or Kanter is Bowie. I just think GM's should disregard a player's height and rank him on poterntial at his position. But they never do when it comes to bigs. That's why there have been so many busts in terms of 5's. Draft a Duncan, Gasol or Howard and you have a huge advantage over most teams. And every year there are 5 or 6 GM's who reach trying to find the next great center and ened up with a Kwame or Darko instead.

Perhaps the coach sees something that many of the Knight homers refuse to see, Knight isn't that athletic, doesn't have PG skills, and isn't worth a top 5 pick.

Perhaps a top 20 or 15, like Jason Terry. But not top 3. The guy isn't Drose folks.

Time to move on

Or maybe the Jazz (or Kanter's agent) are paying him to pimp Enes so DWill or Irving fall down to 2/3.

Who's comparing Brandon Knight to Derrick Rose, the league MVP?

With KOC as gm you never know anything. Watch the Jazz draft Keith Benson.
KOC has certainly had his share of first-round busts, but he's never spent a first-round who wasn't considered a first-round talent at the time, or could even be called "a major reach."

I have 8,000 posts on the 'main' Kentucky board and am incredibly familiar with how Cal handles these situations. I LOVE Calipari, but he is the master of spin (I don't even mean that in a bad way, at all, just that I always look for the 'why' in what he says).

I KNOW, for a fact, that Calipari thinks Kanter is a top 10 big man in the NBA within 2 years. However, I take this particular quote with a grain of salt.

I'd only judge the Snyder and Humphries picks as "busts." Koufos and Almond were drafted late and anything near or after 20 is a crap shoot. Brewer was a solid starter, about what you'd expect at that pick. KOC has had two top-10 picks. He hit a home run with Deron, and correctly traded up to get him (otherwise we would have drafted Felton). Still a little early to call Hayward a success, but it certainly looks like he'll be quality starter.

Not an intentional knock on KOC, just saying he's the master of surprise. I was completely floored by the Hayward pick and the way Deron was traded - I hadn't heard anything about it so when it happened I didn't believe it. Don't misunderstand me - I'm a fan of our GM.

So I picked Keith Benson because, ala KOC, it wouldn't be expected.

That's how KOC rolls. He's old school and believes trades should remain a secret until consummated. Remember how irate he got when the AK deal was leaked, and then fell apart. That's why trades should be signed off by all parties before they're announced. None of us heard a word about Jefferson until Greg Miller couldn't keep the secret any longer. And KOC had been talking about it with Kahn since the previous trade deadline.
