The summer of 2018 is going to epic beyond most they we have seen in a long time. With big name players hitting the free agent market, money drying up and a very good draft to boot. The one player that I want to bring up is Demarcus Cousins.

John Wall and Cousins are best buds and do a lot together. They have openly come out and said that they want to play together and with Cousins hitting free agency Washington could make this happen. They will have to cut salary to make it happen and their best option is trading Porter.

The Jazz would have to drop some salary to make it happen and Burke would seem to be the best option.

I think Porter would fit the Jazz mold very well and would just add to our defensive identity. He is a good 3 point shooter that will only help the Jazz in the future.

It does create some questions however

These 3 free agents for the Jazz will be brought into question

Derrick Favors
Dante Exum
Rodney Hood

Projections are $102 million / $124 million tax

Rudy Gobert $22,741,573
Ricky Rubio $14,800,000
Joe Ingles $12,545,455
Alec Burks $11,536,515
Dante Exum $6,619,903
Thabo Sefolosha $5,250,000
Jonas Jerebko $4,000,000
Rodney Hood $3,472,887
Ekpe Udoh $3,360,000
Donovan Mitchell$3,111,480
Raul Neto $1,839,228
Tony Bradley $1,679,520
Joel Bolomboy $1,544,951
Royce O'Neale $1,378,242
$93,879,754

cut down to

Otto Porter $26,011,913
Rudy Gobert $22,741,573
Ricky Rubio $14,800,000
Joe Ingles $12,545,455
Dante Exum $6,619,903
Rodney Hood $3,472,887
Ekpe Udoh $3,360,000
Donovan Mitchell$3,111,480
Raul Neto $1,839,228
Tony Bradley $1,679,520
$96,181,959

Including the tax holds (excluding the cap hold for Favors)

If they signed Exum for 3 years $30 mil that would would leave about 18 mil approximately to sign either Favors or Hood. Udoh could also be cut and also neto

Jazz would be

Rubio, Exum,
Hood, Mitchell
Porter, Ingles
?????, Draft pick ????
Gobert, Bradley

or

Rubio, Exum
Mitchell,
POrter, Ingles
Favors,
Gobert, Bradley

So much effort here... why? Unless Gobert is out like the whole year and we lose another key piece I don't see us being in the top 5.

With our depth the worst I could see us is 10-14 and unless porter totally sucks there ain't no way he's getting there. There are some **** teams this year... will be hard to tank.

the wizards trade him to us to open cap space so they can sign cousins

I'm sorry I didn't read it... I thought this was Michael Porter. I could see an Otto porter trade if things go poorly for the Wiz.

You really want to pay him more than Rudy?

Think this through. He's not a top 10 player.

Players have been overpaid the past 2 years. David Lock is saying there won't be as much money in the market this summer. The Jazz will be able to find players of Potter's ilk for less than $26 million.

That's not the way you should think it through.

Players were overpaid the previous two years. This was the year when spending normalized a lot.

Porter is the prototypical 3/4 who can shoot, play D, and is an intelligent player (probably capable of more playmaking than he gets to do w/ Wizards). Is he worth the max? Not entirely sure, but I think its close and he has room to improve.

1. The Jazz aren't getting him
2. If they did, he should/would be the starting 4.
3. Simply trading OPJR for free cap-space to the Jazz (which amounts to them giving up OPJR for Favors, Joe Johnson, and someone like Sefalosha expiring contracts, which would be a terrible trade for them) isn't even enough to free up space to sign Cousins. They would still have to dump guys like Ian Mahinni and Marcin Gortat to make room.

Agreed it does get complicated for the Wizards but if Wall went to management and said he wanted to play with his buddy Cousins the Wizard could make it happen. With Porter off the roster it does only drops to 88 mil so that would only give them 14 million so yeah they would still have to get rid of Gortat and Mihinimi (who is almost impossible to move)

Depending on what Cousins is willing to sign for to play with his friend i guess. It would cast the Wizard first round picks to be able to sign Cousins.

Wall
Beal
Oubre (if he can continue to improve)
Morris
Cousins

Is a pretty decent team in the east. Wall might have the personality to keep cousins in check. With Lebron going to the lakers next summer it leaves the east wide open for a good team.

I do like your idea of starting him at the 4 that means Favors would be gone.

a little side note on the Mihinmi contract couldnt they do they split the payments up over time? Not sure how that works. the Lakers will probably have to use it on Deng also.

Well duh Favors would be gone. How else would the jazz complete a trade for Porter while Wizards take on only expiring contracts?

Your scenarios are practically impossible. The Wizards arent clearing that much cap without taking anything back.

All i can say is there are going to be a lot of movement next summer

So the stretch provision I just looked it up. If the Wizards waive mihimni next summer the last remain 32 million will be broken down into 5 payments of 6.4 almos t clearing 10 mil off their books for the next 2 years.

My math says that if they could trade the last year of Gortat, stretch mihimni and trade porter with the trade kicker they could still offer Cousins a 30 mil per year contract

If they manage to pull all that off without taking salary back, which isnt happening.
