I didn't say Rudy doesn't help the perimeter defense. I said he can't cure CHRONICALLY poor perimeter defense. Sure he helps. But to say you can have two poor defenders on the perimeter and it doesn't matter because Gobert is inside is erroneous. Exum was a very good defender; Burks hasn't shown that ability. Will Hood and Burks close out on 3PT shooters? Will they fight through screens? Pretty easy for opponents to just fire away. Or get past Burks and pass off to the open center when Rudy steps up to help.
As BAD as Trey is, I'd still say he's a better defender at the 1 than Burks. If length is the concern, why don't we just play Rudy at the 1 and start Pleiss at the 5? It's not just about length. It's about the ability to stay in front of your man and switch quickly as needed. If Burks shows he can defend and distribute, then fine, give him a shot at PG. I think you'll see a miserable failure, though. There's a reason teams have PG's and not just two 6'5" SG's. In fact, many teams are playing two-PG sets.
Agreed that Gobert doesn't make our perimeter defense unnecessary. Of course not. But 2 years ago, we were the worst perimeter defense in the league. To end last season we were one of the best. Gobert makes a HUGE difference in tactically limiting the options for opposing offenses. Dante improved our perimeter defense more than Trey... no doubt. But I don't believe Trey will make THAT big of a difference on the outside. And if he does, he will sit. It's that easy.
Remember what two teams focused the MOST on stretching the floor in the NBA last year? Golden State and San Antonio. Post all star break the Jazz were one of 7 teams to beat golden state and we beat San Antonio 2 - 0. I actually believe that our perimeter defense will be stalwart next season and that Trey will bring that down only slightly.
Also, Hayward was the point last year. 90% of Dante's plays were to dribble the ball down and give it to someone else. Mostly Hayward or Hood. So, to play Alec Burks in Dante's absence isn't absurd. We like length on the floor and that is one of our matchup strengths that we exploit.
