Pick and Roll/Pop

The Thriller

I think before everyone wets themselves with Knight, we need to consider our offense. We aren't the GS Warriors who surround themselves with great athletes and run and gun. Even with a change of coach, we're still trying to run basically the same system. And the pick and roll is still one of the most devastating plays in Basketball.

Which brings my question, can Knight run the pick and roll? When he does, what does he do? How does he react?
I've seen Harris try and run it, and he typically doesn't create for anyone and ends up only creating for himself. Price just seems to kinda bounce around and turn it over.

Can Knight run it?

Now, considering our bigs... Millsap is literally the only one that runs it. Favors has potential, but is still raw. While Al Jefferson I just don't see ever becoming a very good player in the pick and roll.

Consider what Kanter could do. He seems to have the understanding to be able to read defenses. He seems to be able to roll. And clearly has the Memo like ability to pop.

So again, before we wet ourselves with guys like Knight, lets consider our team and our strategies.

In our system, who's the better fit?

I agree completely that it's an important quality for Jazz PG's to have, but I don't think it should be a deciding factor when drafting a 19-year old PG like Knight.

In stealing homecourt from the Bulls tonight, the Heat took the lead for good on a LeBron 3pt FG that came off a LeBron/Mike Mike Miller pick-and-pop. I doubt LeBron ever ran the pick-and-roll at St. Vincent-St. Mary's. In many respects Deron & Boozer couldn't hold Stockton and Malone's jock, but I do think they ran the pick-and-roll nearly as beautifully as the two Hall-of-Famers. That ability wasn't blatantly visible during their collegiate days - at Illinois in a 3-guard motion offense, Deron ran little screen-roll, but did show the ability to shoot and pass off the dribble. Same with Boozer, very little pick-and-roll but showed good hands and the ability to score with either hand around the basket as well as hit the mid-range j.

I think a player's screen-roll ability is more of a factor once they're already in the league (like when considering which FA's to sign) than when being drafted. Knight has many of the qualities you look for in a young PG, and if he has the work ethic that is being reported - I'm confident he can become a good screen-roll player if that's what the Jazz want him to be.

i will repeat, lets get both. Knight may eventually fall down to 7-8 and its not impossible to get him by trade .
i have same questions about knights game style, whether it would fit us or not. But im sure it will be better than harris, and he is a young guy, he can improve himself. I love his first step and his courage. We will see how much further he will carry his game

Also, a monkey can run the pick n roll. All it takes is chemistry between the people running it and a lot of practice.
