Portland offered Sloan HC job

Told 'em where to shove it.

Portland general manager Neil Olshey on Friday told media in Las Vegas that ex-Jazz coach Jerry Sloan was formally offered the Blazers’ vacant head coaching position this week.According to media reports, Olshey said Sloan decided to sleep on the offer, then turned it down.

Sloan confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune on Thursday that he’d declined the Blazers’ offer. Initial reports were that Sloan was only a candidate, though, and didn’t reveal the longtime Jazz coach had actually been offered the position.

So glad this didn't happen. COY in Portland would would give me the discordant feelings.

If he really thinks he is not too old to coach, please take it somewhere in the east where I can root for him in silence.

So I was thinking of offering Sloan the head coaching position to Jerry Sloan for my ward ball team. I was wondering if you guys thought he would accept, and also whether or not Jazz fanz would freak out at how disloyal he is for taking the phone call?

I'd take him back in a heartbeat. That being said, I don't know why anyone would go anywhere near Portland. That place is a mess and has been for a long, long time.

If Jerry wants to coach - I hope he can find a spot, but just not Portland. They already had a very good coach in Nate McMillan and insanely fired him because that front office (mainly due to ownership) is a joke.

Don't limit yourself. Also interview the local middle school basketball coach as well as the female volleyball coach. In fact, schedule Sloan's interview for 5 min after the other interviews start so he has to wait around for his chance to prove that he has what it takes.

Did Portland every make it out of the first round of the playoffs under McMillan?

McMillan had a 266-259 record with Portland and three first round play-off exits. He had a losing record the season he was fired. I keep hearing how great a coach he was, but I don't see it in his record. Seems to me more like an under achiever.

How long was Portland expected to hang on to him if he could never get out of the first round?

With Felton and Babbitt on the team, Sloan would have likely lost his mind.
And then there's the owner, who is completely clueless and fires personnel whenever he wakes up in a bad mood.

I think Jerry has shown by his actions in pulling out of the Bobcats' coaching search and turning the Blazers down that while he may be open to coming back, he's obviously not desperate to come back. If he does get back into coaching, it will be where and when he deems is the right place and time. And unless he's hurting for money, that's exactly how it should be for a HOF coach.
