Portland's "future" roster situation as it stands seems to support the GM's comment:
PG - ??
SG - Matthews
SF - Batum
PF - Aldridge
C - ??
Portland has Net's pick which is around 4-5 range (with Charlotte, Wizards and NO a lock in top 3) and again around 11th with its own pick. So if Portland's intention is to find a "dynamic point guard" first and foremost would it be too much of a reach for them to pick Lillard at the 4-5 spot? (Knowing that Utah could pick him up at around the 9th spot?) That would be a reach I know but it has happened before in 2008 when Westbrook was supposed to go 8-9 but was picked 4th by the Sonics.
A lot could change between now and draft time but it seems Portland has positioned itself to impact our future once again.
Still, by dealing Wallace, Portland dramatically increased its chances of keeping Nicolas Batum, a rising restricted free agent. And the cherry on top is the first-rounder the Blazers got from Jersey in the Wallace deal that is only protected 1-3. After the demise of Brandon Roy, the Blazers "need to find a backcourt star," general manager Chad Buchanan said Saturday, "either a dynamic point guard or a ball-handing two guard." That pick, along with Portland's own pick -- which is, now, almost certain to also be in the lottery -- should provide the opportunity to do just that, and get the Blazers on the road to recovery.
