Rockets offering Scola, Battier, Ariza in sign-and-trade packages

In their quest to land either of the top two free-agent power forwards – Chris Bosh or Amar’e Stoudemire – the Houston Rockets have been offering Trevor Ariza, Shane Battier and free agent Luis Scola in potential sign-and-trade packages, league sources said.

Scola obviously would have to agree to a sign-and-trade because he’s a free agent. If the Rockets can’t get either Bosh or Stoudemire, they will push forward in negotiations to re-sign Scola.

Those are not very attractive chips. Not horrible, but not sexy. I don't see Toronto biting on that. And I definitely don't see us being interested.

No, they aren't sexy. But, it's going to be hard to do much better than that in a sign-and-trade deal. Sign-and-trades aren't used to deal a superstar for a superstar...it's just meant to get at least something in return.

Ariza, Jordan Hill I would do. I don't want Battier only because it would create a log jam. Not sure how the numbers would work. But I think a sign and trade is a possibility if Lebron leaves the Cavs.

D-Will - Price - Gaines
Matthews - Miles
Ariza - AK
Millsap - AK - Jordan Hill
Fesenko - Okur - Koufos

Yeah, but we can't get salary relief from Houston with Boozer. It's the same with Orlando. Those teams have to have a package of players that make taking back the near equivalent of Boozer's salary worthwhile. It would better to walk away from any package Houston has to offer. Orlando can at least put together a package to consider. More likely, the Jazz are hoping to deal with an under the cap team who will give up one small piece and grant the rest in a TPE.

They haven't shown any interest in Booz and I doubt they will. This is a moot point for the Jazz

I think Ariza can shoot if he takes reasonable shots. He was 33% from 3-pt. I think the Orlando idea might be more appealing if the Jazz can make a player out of Gortat.

Houston proposed a trade for Boozer over a year ago that involved Scola and Battier, I think. They have some interest in Boozer.

Really? After all the Jazz's man-crush on Battier they didn't bite this offer?
Think of what this deal would have done to the Jazz lineup:
DWill, WM, Battier, MSap, Fess with AK, CJ, KK and Scola as key backups (Okur - injured)

In this case, you are right because Houston is over the cap. But my point is that you aren't going to get equal value in return typically in a sign-and-trade deal, or it just isn't worth it to the team the FA is going to give out a huge contract and give away several assets (unless it's LeBron/Wade). So the caliber of players being offered in Houston's case (hypothetically), is about the best the Jazz could hope for in a S&T for Boozer (which you said they should be able to better than basically).

But I do agree with you on what the Jazz are probably looking for in a S&T for Boozer though...

Not buying that but I know some folks on boards posted it. I am guessing their statement that if they could not get Bosh or Amare they would resign Scola is accurate.

Ariza has some jets and is a beast defending; super quick. He'd still be a Laker but his agent wanted a big contract, so the Lakers dumped him. Signing him could be an issue with us...

Ariza is an overpaid, bonafide scrub. Shooting percentages of 39/64/33. He makes Miles look like an all star.

thats stretching

Somewhat, but he is overpaid player who cant make his own shot to save his life. He was great in LA as a 4th option, but he is horrible with out someone setting him up. I actually think Miles could do better in the Houston situation than Ariza could, and vice versa, I think Ariza would be better in Utah than Miles.

Ariza was transitioning from a role as a pure 5th option on offense and defensive specialist to a primary option (even as a ballhandler, something he'd never done in his career) in the span of less than a season. He might even be better next year in that role, but utilized as a premier role player and he becomes more valuable (and certainly worth the MLE, IMO).
