Ya its kinda hard to go through with it once you are up in the air. But the instructors and pilot make it very clear that they dont tolerate chickening out. They make sure you are serious before you board the plane.
I was nervous as hell, but didn't hesitate. Just did it. I jumped by myself too. Didn't even go tandem. They make you jump tandem now though on your first few jumps.
You ought to go do it. Its fun as hell.
I jumped from 12,000 feet. I free falled for 8000 of it. Took about 45 seconds for the free fall. And then another 15 minutes or so to parachute down. I did it on my 18th birthday.

How do you know when to pull the parachute? Do you have a timer on your watch or something?
It's best to do it before you hit the ground.
Well, if you do it too early, isn't there a chance a big gust of wind blows you out into the stratosphere?
