Solution for police problem

Tax the 1% some more, take the $$$ that's dedicated to outfitting police force's with state of the art headquarters and make a police officer's annual salary six figures with full benefits.

The caveat is that it will be much harder to become a police officer. Only the smartest, best trained, physically and mentally fit applicants will be considered. I don't know how realistic this is, but I think we'd all be better off if we had a police force made up of above average humans as opposed to the majority high school failure, fat, donut-eating, trigger-happy "lemme kill sumptin!" cowboys that make up most police forces now.

Aside from your continued juvenile and disgusting bashing of the current police force, and taxing the 1%s, I like the proposal. Raise the bar, and by extension the compensation, for becoming a police officer.

We truly do not need to raise more money, we have enough. The problem is not the revenue stream it is the expenditures. Congress is like a 14 year old girl at the mall with her daddy's credit card.

Our police force is ridiculously large. End the "drug war" even if that doesn't mean ending prohibition, cut the police force significantly and you already have all the money in the budget you'd need to pay police more.

But it isn't just about getting the best and the brightest and paying them a lot. You don't just plug above average people into the current law enforcement model and get better outcomes. And even if your completely remake the police department that doesn't mean you've altered the public's view on them.

No police men or women should carry guns. develop a new weapon or something. eh, like new robocop movie. super stun gun. hell, how about a tranquilizer? no more pistols

Ending the drug war is a great idea.

You know who is against that? The majority of the police force/police departments across the nation (with of course some great exceptions, like LEAP and the current police chief in Madison WI). So it's hard for me to take at face value the excuse of "we only enforce the law" when their unions and representatives take active political stands in promoting the laws that the "just" enforce. They are actively supporting the one major problem that plauges their department and the inner cities. The cynic in me believes they are doing this for job security, though the idealist in me believes they actually think the drug war is worth fighting.

Exactly. People respond to their training, and current police training emphasizes police safety and justification of force over civilian safety and ways to de-escalate.

I know not why police forces oppose ending the drug war. As for me, I think the evidence is clear that we are not and will not ever 'win' the drug war. If we are going to keep fighting it, we need a racially different strategy that does not include incarcerating non-violent young men (large share of whom are black) for possession, use, etc. It also should involve weaning ourselves from our national incarceration fetish and emphasizing treatment, or other means of punishment, over incarceration.

A good start is by legalizing marijuana. I can think of no good reason why we should continue criminalizing marijuana use.

I think the key to her comment was the word 'generally,' which implies the existence of exceptions.

I think "generally" girls who are now women didn't like shoot 'em up games. I think girls who are currently girls actually "generally" like them.

Correction: The "Department of Defense" is like a 6-year old with Scrooge McDuck money.

And this idea in a vacuum makes sense. There wouldn't be enough police officers, however. This also doesn't really address that being a cop invariably makes you LESS FIT to continue being a cop (because the job itself [and probably the culture of the job]) makes you more paranoid, more violent, and more prone to profile.

Not a correction at all. Yes that dept is wasteful but so are all the others. I choose to attack the people with the purse strings instead of one of the many irresponsible departments.
