What's new

Terrible thread, but, whatever...

My wish list for the Jazz draft.

It's pretty short.

I want a player that keeps his shoulders square to the offensive player and moves his feet on defense. Not a guy that turns sideways and tries to reach for the ball.

Is this too much to ask?

It might be because a ton of the guys that the Jazz are going to be looking at don't possess this skill. For instance, I was watching the draftexpress breakdown on Miles PLumblee and I swear to god it was like watching a white Al Jefferson on defense. And nothing to speak of on offense. And I'm asking myself, why would you want this guy? Because he can run fast? Larkin is fail for this skill as well. Shabazz as well.

So, that's it for me. My one criteria for a draftee. Just being able to move his feet and play straight up defense. Anything else is a bonus.

Sorry if this thread is the suck.

Giannis Adetokunbo seems to fit the bill. Not sure he's terrific at staying in front of his man, but, much like AK he looks like he can make up for a lot of errors.

So far

Would take
--------------
Giannis Adetokunbo
Dennis Schroeder
Micheal Carter Williams

Would not take
--------------
Larkin
Plumblee
Shabazz
Olynyk

I like you. Rep'd.

Haven't really followed him.. is he a good defender?

Decent. Keeps a pretty good stance. Maintains the right space. Uses his length to contain offensive players and cover passing lanes. Sometimes he gets caught going under screens, but he can fix that.

Plumlee is explosive.

If he were black he'd go top ten.

Hitch in his broken shot can be fixed.

If fixed he'll be a good player.

Hit his free throws.

He is on the short list for steal of the draft.

Shroeder defense is a myth.

A sales ploy.

There is no video of his good defense.

Only rumors.

He's young.

Plumlee is a guy who does a number of things pretty well, but nothing really stands out as elite, does it?

He's a good, not great athlete. Good, not great rebounder. Good, not great post player. He seems like a solid rotation player, but not much more.

Am I missing something?

Schroeder needs to get stronger. He probably isn't used to the speed and physicality of the American game. That's an adjustment he'll need to make. In Europe he stands out, but in the U.S. there are a number of athletes that are at his level.

From what I saw of Plumblee his defense was identical to Jefferson. It's complete Ole! defense after you get 8 feet from the rim, and if he's moving he has no ability to get up to bother shots, exactly like Jefferson. He may be explosive, and a good runner, but, he's going to suck the life out of any PNR defense he gets involved in, just like Big Al. And at least Al could score. I don't see Plumblee being anything other than an energy guy on that end.

From about 1:30 to 2:30. Watch how he stays with his man, it's like he's glued to him. Also note how he keeps hit body squared up, not letting the opposing player get a shoulder in. Also, look how he uses his body, however slight, to give resistance. Looks like textbook example of great defense by my eye. Reminds me a bit of how Wesley Matthews used to play for us his rookie year.

Sincerely curious whether you watched the right guy.

Sorry, Mason not Miles.

Watch from about 11 minutes on. Notice how players blow by him at will. Notice how he rarely even tries to recover, often not even getting off the floor. Once a guard gets him in a PnR it's a wide open layup for the most part. Reminds me exactly of Big Al. There is no 'explosive' ability on the defensive end, quite the opposite. He's glued to the floor for hte most part.

A) What team is that he's defending? Lithuania junior varsity?

B) What did he do when he played against American kids?
