I just have to say that... 9 times out of 10, reaching for potential means you just wasted millions of dollars in the long run...
A lot of GMs, coaches, etc in the NFL learned this lesson in the beginning... The NBA coaches, GMs, etc still have not learned that lesson...
When you're talking about the NBA, I've learned through the years that you draft guys that can shoot or have great talent overall... Projects rarely pan out in this league... And what is with this love of size... Just because a guy is big doesn't mean he's really worth a ****!
Pure shooters are a dying breed in this league and that is why Jimmer Fredette should have been picked at the 5 by the Raptors... But instead, they make the same mistake they have in the past by drafting another Andrea Bargnani that is going to be average at best...
You can teach a shooter to play defense and run an NBA offense... But I think it's a lot more difficult to teach vice versa... Yes, these guys usually become good utility players when it comes to rebounding and playing defense... But if you're really trying to make a statement in the draft, then you go with talent or shooting 1st IMO...
Some are probably going to ream me saying, "Well Bargnani was a shooter"... I'm not talking about a big man that can shoot necessarily (even though that does help spread your offense)... I'm talking about a 2 or 3 that can shoot the ball consistently...
Now that being said... I like the Jazzs pick... They picked the best player on the board, and the most talented... Its a good pick for that spot... We'll just have to wait and see if I'm right...
Thoughts?
