The Next Great Trilogy

I wonder what the split is between money and storytelling as far as the motive for making this a trilogy instead if two movies. I'll go 50-50.

"Upon recently viewing a cut of the first film, and a chunk of the second, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and I were very pleased with the way the story was coming together. We realised that the richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, gave rise to a simple question: do we tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as filmmakers and fans was an unreserved 'yes.' We know the strength of our cast and of the characters they have brought to life. We know creatively how compelling and engaging the story can be and - lastly, and most importantly - we know how much of the tale of Bilbo Baggins, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur would remain untold if we did not fully realize this complex and wonderful adventure".

I wish they would have taken this approach with the LOTR trilogy as one of the best stories in the books, The Scouring of the Shire, was completely ignored.

dammit the hobbit sucked,
but stretching it to 3 movies!
damm its gonna be a snoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooozefest

I liked LOTR a lot. But making that one book into a trilogy screams desperate for a new movie franchise.

2 movies is more than enough to tell that story. Hell one movie is probably enough.

Next move will be the Silmarillion in 6 movies.

Well, they're going to have to get creative then.

Three movies??

LOTR was three books, Hobbit one book. Maybe the first movie can be about how Bilbo is convinced to leave home or some crap like that.

If you read the article I linked to you'll see that a lot of the history written about Middle Earth is going to be woven into the trilogy.

It is only one book. There is not enough there to make a trilogy from it. There are not that many fight scenes. The trolls, escaping the elves, the goblin chasing scene that leads to gollum, the smaug fight and the 5 armies battle. That is it. That would be spread to thin in a trilogy in my opinion.

In other words, they're rationalizing the "need" to make this a trilogy.

We completely support Peter and his vision for bringing this grand adventure to the screen over the course of three films.

Translation: We'll gladly take the extra money from people who were already drooling about The Hobbit.

The second movie is going to be a classic romcom.

Makes me wonder if the names of all 3 movies will be The Hobbit: "random word/phrase" or if they will change it up to reflect that it is the Hobbit plus a bunch of other crap...
