Punch Bowl Re-Filler
Although I do think Marvin will play better without Al, I'd love to see him opt out. Or maybe the Jazz could buy him out for $5M or so. Then he could look for a MLE deal and earn about the same as he would by staying. Marvin is NOT part of the future for Utah. It would be better to start fresh.

I'd like to see the Jazz either start Burks and Hayward, or have one start and the other come off the bench, with the Jazz bringing in a better starting SF. DeMarre can be re-signed as a backup (if he even wants to stay), but I don't see Carroll as a legit starter.

I had high hopes for him when we got him, but I wouldn't cry if he left. He is't worth his contract, that's for sure. If he stays, he had better pick it up because I am positive that he isn't living up to his potential. The scary thing is that that is kind of how his whole career has been, and he's kind of old to be changing his stripes.

That's pretty much the way I feel. I don't think it was a bad move - it just didn't work out.

Marvin has to see the writing on the wall - he played less than 20mpg the last 25 games of the season. And he was playing behind guys who will definitely be here next year (Hayward, Burks). He could probably trade less money next year for a longer contract this off-season. But another season playing reserve minutes may hurt his market value considerably.

Why would he opt out. He can play totally mediocre at best and still get a ton of money and minutes over a guy who hustles his *** off.

He's not gonna opt-out, and honestly, I don't care if he stays. Less cap room next year means we are less likely to add a major free agent signing this year that could make it hard for us to re-sign all 4 of our 4. Plus it doesn't hurt to have an expiring contract on the roster for trade scenarios.

Marvelous Marvin Gaye Williams.

Wow. And Marvin is a selfish guy. Probably doesn't want to really play in Utah, and is just playing mediocre sitting back on that 8 mil he's making. He put up a good 1st game this season, rocked the preseason, but only show small strides throughout the season.

Im blaming Corbin and that crackhead offense for a small part of it, though.

I wonder about this. When he arrived, we all said "Atlanta just run isos, he's never played in a structured offence, let's see what he can do in the Jazz system." Except there was no such thing as a "Jazz system" this year. Everyone struggled at some stage - look at Hayward as an example - so it it fair to judge Marvin based on this season? Corbin basically mismanaged everyone on the roster, the entire team underachieved, doesn't this include Marvin?

Having said that, Carroll out-produced Marvin this season, so I wouldn't be sad if Marvin up and left. But I can't see anyone offering him as much or more than he's getting now, so why would he? And it doesn't matter who's on the roster as long as Ty is on the bench, anyway.

Marvin seemed disinterested most of the time I saw him on the floor. If he's just going through the motions then opting-in seems like the thing to do.

Dudes, how many times do I have to say this:
Marvin's contract will be useful as a salary match in some deal. We can't just have players WE WANT TO KEEP and also BE ACTIVE ON THE TRADE MARKET. I think this is fairly obvious. $8 mil in expiring on a player who can still defend will be easy to ditch. He'd look great in Chicago.

just look at it this way, the jazz now have a really nice expiring contract to use come the trade deadline. some teams are going to be looking to dump salary, maybe we can get another pick next draft with him.

Well, if Utah didn't have the expiring, they could just absorb a contract and give the other team a TPE. Marvin will opt in, count on it!

Seeing as how the Jazz will likely be giving every player a bonus next season (for being under the minimum), it doesn't really matter. I really think with Al gone, Marvin could be a decent option on offense. He may even have some trade value at the deadline...and not just as an expiring contract.

come on he is a 8 mil expiring contract. He might be a great option to get another draft pick around the trade deadline as teams will be looking to shed salary.

You probably misunderstood what I was saying. Jazz will likely be $20M UNDER the cap next season. I think a FAR more valuable trade chip will be our ability to give teams TPE's - i.e. just absorb salaries without having to give anything back, especially for teams that are really deep into the luxury tax penalty.

We're not going to spend all our space; obviously have to keep a large portion open for re-signing our youngsters over the next couple of years. So I see Utah auctioning their cap space first to the highest bidders. Then they'll still have $8M coming off the books by just letting Marvin expire...unless he's playing well and a contender wants to give up a young prospect for him.

I wouldn't mind him coming back as long as we don't re-sign Sap and Jefferson. It seems like Corbin isn't afraid to play him from the bench, and while he will be on a crappy deal it's only for one year. Won't hurt too much and he'll help fill out the roster.
