This team's idenity-- who is going to define it?

In the Deron-Boozer-Okur-AK playoff runs of the last 5 years we were a great offensive team and a good rebounding team. This allowed us to over come our defensive weaknesses. Against teams (read the Laker's) with the ability to make our offense inefficient and to limit our rebounding we consistently feel short.

Our efficient offense was a product of Deron setting people up, Boozer's high scoring percentages and Okur long-range scoring.

So what is going to be this team identity going forward?

Are we going to be a strong rebound, defense and inside scoring team like Memphis?

A team OKC who is built around to great scoring options surrounded with defensive pieces and supporting shooters?

Are we going to be an isolation team? Or we going to continue our flex/UCLA cut offense? Are we going to be a defense/rebound/fastbreaking team?

Hayward is a very flexible piece. He is a highly efficient scorer in half court and he excels on the break as well.

Favors isn't an efficient post threat yet but he finishes well around the rim and can catch the ball in traffic. Favors is a top shelf rebounder. Favors excels in fastbreak situations too.

Jefferson is an adequate defensive player who scores at a high rate in the post. His jumper good enough that he can play next to Favors. He is less effective on a fastbreak.

Harris excels in fastbreak situations. He has improved his overall game that he okay in a half court set.

Millsap is good on the break but his size limits his effectiveness as a defensive player. He is more effective in the half court- his skill level can overcome his limited athletic ability and size.

So our current core players appear to be split between half-court and fastbreak effectiveness. We could use an influx a defensive talent and rebounding ability into our rotation.

I think our draft picks are going to a tipping point on how this team's identity will evolve.

For example if we ended up with Biyombo and Leonard we would be better equiped to be a good defensive team, a good rebounding team and a good fastbreaking team.

What direction do you think our team should take?

The coach? I think it kinda begins there.

Coaches like Don Nelson and Mike D-Antoni typically have uptempo no defense offensive chucking teams.

What's coach Corbin's theme? His attitude? His personality?

We'll soon see...

I'd like us to be known for toughness. That's all.

I guess it comes back to the age old question does the Coach adapt to his personel or does the team adapt to the coach?

Might be better to ask this question after the draft.
Oh well, mostly speculation but I think Corbin will run a looser, less complex version of Sloan and Phil Johnson's system. W/out Deron - we saw less screen-roll and alot more flex and postups. Also get the impression they will try to push the ball more - which I think is a great move because that's something Harris (and Watson if he returns) really excell at. Last third of the season demonstrated that Hayward can thrive in our halfcourt sets, Big Al can have some success being a focal point on the block, and Harris and Favors can thrive in an up-tempo style. Defensively, while Big Al plays horrid help-defense, he's a good individual low-post defender, and Favors is a good help-defender who can step-out and recover on screen-roll.

In my perfect world, the Jazz will be able to use their 3 potential lottery picks in the next 2 drafts to get that bigtime wing who can create his own shot in pressure situations and the Jazz can build around him and Hayward on the perimeter and Favors up-front. If you're not going to get that rare 7-foot franchise center to build around, then having your three best players at the 2, 3, and 4 would be the direction I'd look at in today's NBA.

Ownership and managment support the coach, so Ty Corbin will define the team identity. So a second round pick who was the 4th option on an average Jazz team, who was later traded for Adam Keefe and ended up being a career journeyman will define your Utah Jazz. If you can't get excited about that, you're not a true Jazz Fan.

In other news, Ty Corbin has already said he wants to tweak the offense and defense. I am hopefull the defensive changes--having players force baseline like everyother NBA team, will have more positive impact. But the offense changes will be more noticeable. He mentioned the possibitly of going to a two gaurd front, which to me sounds like him parroting what KOC has wanted to do since the 2004-2005 season but wasn't allowed to by Jerry. I would personally like the two gaurd front but don't think Devin Harris fits into that system very well (dominates the ball and can't shoot threes). And I wonder if the 2 gaurd front would put the ball in Gordon Haywards hands more? Is that an attempt by management to let Hayward define the team's identy?

I don't think Corbin even knows. He's a deer in ****ing headlights. Be prepared for <30 wins next year.

I hope our identity is a "play off team". If Ty doesn't have a clear system on how he wants this team defined by...we'll be back in the lottery. I think the organization has given Ty a very long leash, but they won't be patient forever.

This but if I had my choice to define what I want this team to be I would say Detroit bad boys.

I must say, I like the Idea of drafting Biyombo and Leonard! Still, If Jimmer ended up a success in the NBA, It would be a match made in heaven for much of the Utah Jazz Fan base!!

Leonard can't spread the floor and in today's NBA, that means something. Have we not learned our lesson?
