In the Deron-Boozer-Okur-AK playoff runs of the last 5 years we were a great offensive team and a good rebounding team. This allowed us to over come our defensive weaknesses. Against teams (read the Laker's) with the ability to make our offense inefficient and to limit our rebounding we consistently feel short.
Our efficient offense was a product of Deron setting people up, Boozer's high scoring percentages and Okur long-range scoring.
So what is going to be this team identity going forward?
Are we going to be a strong rebound, defense and inside scoring team like Memphis?
A team OKC who is built around to great scoring options surrounded with defensive pieces and supporting shooters?
Are we going to be an isolation team? Or we going to continue our flex/UCLA cut offense? Are we going to be a defense/rebound/fastbreaking team?
Hayward is a very flexible piece. He is a highly efficient scorer in half court and he excels on the break as well.
Favors isn't an efficient post threat yet but he finishes well around the rim and can catch the ball in traffic. Favors is a top shelf rebounder. Favors excels in fastbreak situations too.
Jefferson is an adequate defensive player who scores at a high rate in the post. His jumper good enough that he can play next to Favors. He is less effective on a fastbreak.
Harris excels in fastbreak situations. He has improved his overall game that he okay in a half court set.
Millsap is good on the break but his size limits his effectiveness as a defensive player. He is more effective in the half court- his skill level can overcome his limited athletic ability and size.
So our current core players appear to be split between half-court and fastbreak effectiveness. We could use an influx a defensive talent and rebounding ability into our rotation.
I think our draft picks are going to a tipping point on how this team's identity will evolve.
For example if we ended up with Biyombo and Leonard we would be better equiped to be a good defensive team, a good rebounding team and a good fastbreaking team.
What direction do you think our team should take?
