Top 5 Movies:

5) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo- Huge Fincher fan, never read the book nor saw the swedish version but so some of it was hard to understand in the beginning with the whole family situation but the movie was pretty darn good. Some good rape scenes...jk

4) Young Adult- just saw it and thought it was great. I loved Juno, the writer did this movie, and Reitman is one of my favorite directors (although this is probably is worst effort along with Thank You For Smoking)

3) Horrible Bosses- funniest movie of 2011, nuff said.

2) Crazy Stupid Love- best comedy (note: note funniest, but best comedy film overall)

1) Moneyball- Jonah Hill was finally good in a movie

Top 5 TV Shows

5) Friday Night Lights- one of my favorite shows of all time ended, it was a great run. Most underrated show IMO of the past few years.

4) Modern Family/How I Met Your Mother/ New Girl- all funny shows but not having great seasons, bottom tier to Parks and Rec

3) The League- not as good as season 2, but still funniest show on TV

2) Parks and Rec- got into this show this summer, its fantastic. Best ensemble on TV.

1) Breaking Bad- this season was insane. Best show on TV right now

I haven't seen enough movies to list a top 5, and there really haven't been enough movies that interested me.

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
2. X-Men First Class
3. Um...Attack the Block? Horrible Bosses?

But TV?

1. Breaking Bad
2. Game of Thrones
3. Sons of Anarchy (excellent season until the finale)
4. Modern Family
5. Wilfred (started out amazing, fizzled at the end)

I have two episodes to go for Dexter and this has been a strong season. Boardwalk Empire is in its entirety on my DVR and that is up next.

There hasn't been a good movie to come out in 2011 that I've seen.

Game of Thrones is the best TV show to come out since Hard Knocks, however. I also liked Nick Swardson's Pretend Time and the Norm MacDonald Sports Show (which was cancelled I believe).

JPR, are you still in college? I can't remember the last time you posted on here. If so, I hope all is well. Also if you make threads like these please don't limit it to the relative present. American pop culture has been in a scary downward spiral and anything that comes out of it has been utter trash for the dumb masses, who also continue to get progressively dumber.

On an unrelated note, as a Hip-Hop fan who is truly sickened and hurt by 99.9% of what's considered in the genre these days I was curious if fans of Punk music feel the same about their beloved niche? I was never a big Punk fan, but have heard the pioneers and some of the all time greats. From what I can gather, punk rock these days is guys wearing tight jeans, make up and singing lyrics 12-16 year old girls connect too. Any input would be appreciated.

I watched all 4 seasons of Breaking Bad with my wife in the past 6 weeks. I must say, apart from being incredibly depressing with almost no likeable characters (the only ones I like are Saul and Mike), it has been pretty gripping. Who knew Cranston was that good an actor. He has masterfully shown the gradual transition from mild-mannered high school teacher to ruthless drug lord. I am getting sick of his wife and I am getting sick of he and Jessie defending each other to Gus and others, then being total ******** and ******** to each other face to face. I also wouldn't care if his sister-in-law gets shot in the face. But I am looking forward to season 5.

IMO, categorization is good and bad. The problem with music now is that there is so much that crosses over genres. You could have a separate sub-genre for every 3 or 4 acts (As an aside, I have been watching this documentary series on VH1 Classic about the history of heavy metal. Very interesting, but they have dozens of sub-genres mapped out, just within the confines of heavy metal.) Too complicated. So, music is lumped together, usually by marketers, not by someone who really knows what their doing.

As a fan, it can be pretty annoying, but if you like what you like, it doesn't really matter what some poser calls themselves. The punk movement peaked in the late 70's so there have been a good 4 decades of quasi punk. Not that it's dead, but I think that 90% of people who would classify themselves as fans of "punk" identify with the most mainstream side of it, and don't really know the roots, aside from maybe the Ramones and Sex Pistols. They have very little idea that it goes much deeper than that. It's their loss, but they don't know any better.

I don't know a lot about hip hop, but I would assume it's the same story.

Sorry hi-jacking, JPR.

I guess if you only look at the mainstream side of music then your generalizations are pretty accurate. However, if you are someone who isn't a complete moron, there is a ton of good music coming out from every genre, you just have to look for it.

Then again, if you are the type of person who can't get over how awesome a certain period of music was and can't accept the fact that music evolves and changes, you are just going to be a jaded old man who is upset that nothing sounds like it did back then.

Yup I am still in college but I'm graduating after this coming quarter in Business/Accounting. Gonna try to move back to LA and do finance stuff in the entertainment industry.

The "tight jeans, make up" etc that you were talking about is more "pop-punk" which is truly just "pop" music. I definitely think the quality of punk has gone down since I began getting into it in the early 2000s. But at the same time, I don't really listen to as much punk as I used to. I still love the music and its what i listen to by far the most, but all the new bands I am getting into are more Indie, mainstream music then punk rock.

Excellent points. I was unfair to generalize. I'm not into facebook/twitter/the internet aside from jazzfanz and gmail, so it's hard for me to 'find' the great artists. So my sample is generally what I see on TV and hear on the radio. When I find a new band or emcee it's always from a friend who put me onto them. For example, I made a thread for music lovers and brought Pickwick to this forum. They are, by far, the best band I've heard come out in a while. In fact, I may bump that thread with another group I just found out about.

Movies
1. Drive
2. The Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo
3. Moneyball
4. Warrior

That's all I can put that's within reason. I've yet to see many other widely acclaimed films like The Artist or The Descendants, the latter of which I suspect will win Best Picture at the Oscars.

TV
1. The Killing
2. Modern Family
3. Boardwalk Empire
4. Dexter
5. Top Chef

Sorry. I've never gotten into Breaking Bad, though I will at some point.

I don't watch enough movies or tv to have lists, but that new Impractical Jokers show is funny and likely more entertaining than anything you guys listed.

Two shows I like are The Walking Dead and Two and a Half Men (with Sheen)

TV: I am going based off what shows I was most excited about coming on each week and had to see the same night it was on.

5. Tie - Game of Thrones/Mad Men - just got into Mad Men last summer and found it well written and interesting.
4. Southland - I love it. Very gritty and a slightly different take from the traditional cop shows.
3. The League/It's Always Sunny/Parks and Rec - love Parks, IASIP never disappoints, and even though The League dropped off a bit this season I still love Ruxin (Nick Kroll).
2. Curb Your Enthusiasm. Unbelievably funny and Larry David is the most clever guy in Hollywood.
1. Breaking Bad- Might be the best TV show I've ever seen (beating out The Wire) depending on how it wraps up next season.

Barely missing the cut - American Horror Story, Downton Abbey. Louie. Homeland (just watched this over Christmas and probably would put it ahead of FNLs). Friday Night Lights - fun show and good final season.

I guess I have way more than 5, but I love TV and couldn't leave any off.

For the most part, movies sucked this year. Rise of The Planet of the Apes and The Thing were both decent movies; but I certainly wouldn't call them memorable by any stretch. Super 8 was also good; but not great.

Same thing with television. Sons of Anarchy had some great moments; but the finale was a complete cop out. Boardwalk Empire also had some good episodes; but got convoluted as the season went on. As much as I hate to admit it, Family Guy has become hit or miss.

Beavis and Butthead - Mike Judge could have done a money grab with this; but the show is just as funny/retarded as it was 18 years ago when it was in its prime.

Curb your Enthusiasm - another excellent season

Louie - show is getting stranger with every episode and I like it.

Wilfred - best new show.

Totally forgot about Curb and Beavis and Butthead. Didn't watch enough of Hell on Wheels. And I'd put Mad Men on here but I don't think any new episodes even aired this past calendar year, did they?
