Those Galaxy S3 commericals are amazing! You can send videos and other files just by physically touching eachothers phones togethor!!!

Amazing!!

Just wait..in the future we will be able to text message and email videos/other documents withouth having to touch phones and physically be next to eachother!!

The question is...."Will we all live to see the day when you can send documents/videos to others people's phone clear across the country without having to physically touch phones??????????"

I dunno that sounds like sci-fi stuff to me. How would vidoes and documents travel thousands of miles through the air to another persons phone?

I guess we can only dream, because sending information by touching eachothers phones is much less effecient and super annoying.

Someday, but as for now I will drive home and touch my wifes phone to my phone so I can see a video of my daughter on my way back to work.

NFC technologies are intended as a platform to connect the digital and physical worlds. So for example, you can go to a store, pick up a bunch of stuff, touch your phone to the NFC terminal, and walk out. That way, you wouldn't have to worry about people stealing and using your information, as they would need to have your personal hardware to make purchases. This applies to any kind of authentication system where you need to be physically present.

Our "phones" will be (if not already) the most important possesion we have. They have or will replace land lines, calculators, computers, cameras, credit cards, steroes, wallets, books...

Amazing things are happening.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Stoked again.

I hope you're not being sarcastic, because you're correct. And it's just the beginning. Soon enough, even phones will be obsolete.

I agree, yet Samsung spends millions and millions on advertising an obsolete technology and then claims "the next big thing is already here"

It's not obsolete. It just came out a few years ago, and it hasn't even entered the mainstream yet...

How long until we get our communication device physically implanted in our bodies and we control it with our brains?

It was obsolete when years and years ago you could send documents through email/text.

I can't imagine any situation when I would use that feature.

Agreed. On another note, when do you think we'll be able to turn on the lights with the sound of our voice instead of having to go to all the trouble of flipping a switch?

I already explained. You would use it whenever you need to communicate securely with a nearby device or system. Normal long range communications can be intercepted. For example, you can turn your car ignition remotely, but that's not very secure. Most keyless systems require you to have the "key" on you to operate the car. So instead of using each company's propriety technology, they can all switch to a universal standard.

There are many other uses for near field communication as well. For example, you can pack much more information in high frequency signals if distance isn't a problem. Same applies to wirelessly charging your equipment. Or interacting with embedded micro-computers in the environment.

The physical and the digital worlds are converging, and companies are scrambling to create platforms to take advantage of that. Your ability to communicate across the world is still there. It's not like they want you to switch from wi-fi to a standard with a 5 inch range.

Smart light bulbs already exist. You can control their intensity and color, give them automatic schedule, or even program them to turn on at a low intensity if you enter a dark room at night, and much more.

No I am being quite honest. It is true.

I wonder what the next leap will be. Implants? Perhaps a chip inserted into the brain that allows us to "see" all that info. Think something and it is sent to who we want and that person can suddenly see it in a little holographic display only visible to them?

Calls, text, video, songs and what not on 24/7. Personally I'd love to be able to have a song that I can hear when no one else could. Rock out whenever whereever.

We're still some ways away from such implants. The next paradigm is clearly the expansion of wearable computing. Probably phone peripherals at first, like smart watches and smart glasses. As electronics get more miniaturized and AI develops further, we'll start seeing powerful standalone wearables. Within 20 years, we should start seeing smart contact lenses become a standard. As augmented reality becomes an essential part of the internet that overlays much of the physical world, we'll probably enter the cyborg phase where permanent implantation is worth it.

Right. Once upon a time there was a notion that in the future we'd control our lights by the sound of our voice. What I'm saying is that if we wanted to do that we'd be doing it already, but flipping a switch is so ****ing easy why would we even want to install a voice control system? Just like Bean is saying that transferring playlists and such can be done other ways that are equally easy and effective.

I can see "smart glasses" being a huge success in todays society. I think it is wild enough yet familiar enough to be a huge success. Glasses that tint/untint based on the lighting, sun and glare. That can surf the web, send receive emails, calls, texts, videos, take pics...

That would be true if NFC was limited to transferring playlists. That type of application may never catch on, much like your lights example. But just as voice recognition has many applications outside of turning the light on, so will this.

That's a nice start. The true revolution is augmented reality. Electrochromatic glass is already well understood, and electronics are already small enough to allow experimenting with the applications you listed. Google Glass should come out in a year or two, and it should be the first of many similar devices. But once augmented reality develops into its true potential... I don't think people realize how disruptive it is, socially and technologically.
