Trey Burke takes over top spot ESPN NBA Rookie Watch

I don't know if he will be able to explode for 50 points on any given night but beyond that if you are a old school basketball head (especially 30 or over) then doesn't Trey's game kind of remind you of former great Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf ? Besides Pistol Pete and Oscar he was the best scorer in NCAA history and was finding his groove in the NBA before THEY removed him out of the association after he refused to acknowledge the flag over his religious beliefs.

Trey wasn't the scorer he was in college but Rauf never translated his scoring consistently enough in the NBA to make his mark but every now and then he would light a team up and the best defenders from Stockton to Jordan for 40 or 50 points in the type of shooting streaks that was simply crazy. I see a lot of his game in Trey in the way they he starts his offense from the outside, has a fluid mid range game but isn't a great finisher so his FG% was only a few points higher than his 3P% because he couldn't pressure the interior off the drive and finish.

They both are good enough athletes to have made it to the NBA but are very average in terms of their size, speed, leaping ability and quickness so they rely on using picks and spot ups to create their offense. On the upside Trey is a better passer than Mahmoud and will probably surpassed his scoring average but he's the closest I've ever seen because like Mahmoud whether it shows up in his stats or not he has the type of swagger where when he's on you can't guard him because of his shooting and scoring ability.

they both have to keep looking over their shoulder too.
