(CNN) -- U.S. sailors from a carrier strike group whose recent presence in the Persian Gulf drew the ire of Iranian military officials have rescued 13 of the Middle Eastern country's sailors from a hijacked fishing boat, a military spokesman said Friday.
The destroyer USS Kidd came to the aid of the ship Thursday in the North Arabian sea, near the crucial Strait of Hormuz, according to the Navy. The rescue prompted the captain of the freed ship to offer his "sincere gratitude," according to Josh Schminky, a Navy Criminal Investigative Service agent aboard the Kidd."He was afraid that without our help, they could have been there for months," said Schminky
The rescue Thursday came two days after Iran said the United States should not send any more warships into the Persian Gulf.

Obvious set up by the US and a covert CIA agent posing as an Iranian.

You know this is how Iran will spin it.

Probably but I am glad we rescued them. Shows that the US is not the devil that we are made out to be. At least to those sailors at least. Win the populations hearts and minds and the fight is over.

WOW, ""We consider the actions of the U.S. forces in saving the lives of Iranian seamen to be a humanitarian and positive act and we welcome such behavior. We think all nations should display such behavior," Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told broadcaster al Alam

Not sure how that squares with their stance on America and Isreal but maybe this will cool the BS rhetoric coming from both sides.

yep!

We all know how the US is the great Satan and will stop at nothing to destroy Iran. It's objective number uno for all Americans.

Iran throwing up threats again. My solution if I was the commander of US forces it the area would be Apache Gunships. Launch them from the bases and carrier strike group in the region. They would eat the Iranian navy alive.

The Iranians have a fairly effective strategy for taking out a carrier and several other ships if they catch us by surprise. The straights of Hormuz (sp) are tight. Even if they don't catch us by surprise they stand a good chance of doing some serious damage if we're overwhelmed (which is the basis of the strategy anyway) by lots of fast moving small boats and "streams" of anti-ship missiles.

Why even move your ships into the traight intself? The airpower that the US has at its disposal should be able to to handle that. Never let them get close. Soon as they close it hit all Iranian ships in the area from the air and any nearby missle launch platforms.

Not a bad idea at all. The U.S. has a policy of maintaining a presence in the Gulf and of keeping the straights open. So, we symbolically pass a carier strike group through the straights every so often and then have it sit in the Gulf doing circles and flying jets before sending it through again. Even when things are reletively good between us and Iran the Navy is at a hightened state of rediness when transiting the straights. They can hit us with ground-based fixed and mobile missile launchers. If they close the straights there will likely be a carrier strike group in the Gulf that may have to fight it's way out or hunker down and fight from inside the Gulf. The first hour or two would be Iran's best chance at hurting us and possibly sinking a carrier, or at least prohibiting flight ops from it.

If they were to catch us completely off-guard it might be ugly. If we have the luxury of knowing it was coming we could move the strike group out of the gulf and fight them from there. I just doubt the U.S. wants to send the message that we got chased out of the Gulf by Iran's threats.

The USS Abraham Lincoln strike group just passed thru the stright into the gulf yesterday. The strike group is already in place. The commander of an aircraft carrier should always be on guard. Especially close to Iran.

The picture in the second link is actually the USS Abrham Lincoln strike group. That is one tuff nut to crack.

I've been in and out of the Gulf a couple times aboard the USS Nimitz. I worked in Combat Systems in the Ship's Self Defense division. I worked on anti-missile weapons systems as an FC.

That is awesome. I will have to give these a full reading this afternoon when I have more time.

I got all nostalgic and found some pics of me loading missiles on the web.

Wow, peace guys.

As an old lieutenant, I have to warn people. War is not a joke. This time US should behave wisely and deal with Iran with more democratic and peaceful ways. And don't think about Iran's vocal threats. They have to do that to stand strong against their people. I love persians as a nation but their governments are'nt on the rigth track in this new modern era. Neither is US though.

I do not advocate war with Iran. War is never a joke. However if Iran was to close the straight the world community cannot allow that.

Fox "News" is reporting that British and French warships are with the Abraham Lincoln carrier group as well.
