Picks much before 1990 are not included, I don't know them.
If there are any notable undrafted guys that started with Utah , I don't know of them either.

How the hell was one of the biggest and longest men in the league picked at 72???
I know he might've been clumsy, but you just don't pass up that much hieght....

Mark Eaton was actually drafted twice. Once by the Suns in the 7th round back in 1979, and then by the Jazz in the fourth in 1982.

First time around, he was drafted after his second year at Cypress Junior College. It was possible because he was 4 years out of HS at that point. I'm not sure why exactly the Jazz were able to draft him 3 years later(as in I don't know how that invalidated the Suns pick), but they did it after he took a year off and then played at UCLA for two years.

At UCLA, he averaged 3.7 minutes per game his senior year, and as you can imagine, he didn't put up spectacular numbers. 1.3 PPG, 2.0 RPG, and 0.5BPG. I know they say you can't teach height, but I don't think anyone with those numbers would get drafted nowadays.

To be completely honest, I don't even know who Eaton backed up at UCLA, but I'm pretty sure that guy never made it to the ASG.

Hornacek was drafted in the 2nd round, #46 by Phx. I think that's more significant than Bobby Hansen personally.

Absolutely. I just did players drafted by Utah for now.

List of overachieving Utah players drafted by other teams first.

Good start, I would add:

PG: Howard Eisley (30th ovr - 2nd-rnd pick)
SG: John Starks (undrafted); Jeff Hornacek (46); Raja Bell (undrafted)
SF: David Benoit (undrafted) - weakest position
PF: Carlos Boozer (35th ovr - 2nd-rnd pick)
C: Mehmet Okur (37th ovr - 2nd-rnd pick)

Also, I'd put Mo Williams (47th ovr - 2nd-rnd pick) on the Jazz team.

Eaton sucked coming out of UCLA. He couldn't get off the bench in college. Eaton is a perfect example of hard work and being fortunate to be 7'4". He also played at the perfect time with the perfect team for him. Jazz just funneled everything into Eaton and basically put his hands up to block shots. Oh yea, Eaton was a whipping boy for a lot of Jazz fans because he was so bad on offense. He was great on defense as long as he wasn't playing against Dan Issel.

CJ Miles (going to get booed) but he is still in the league as a 2nd round pick.

Boooo! Just kidding. CJ deserves to be mentioned...7 years for a 2nd rounder is pretty good. Maybe by the time he's Kobe's age and he's played 14 years, he'll figure it out.

It won't matter, it all depends on the expectations.
He was expected to be the next Jordan for the Jazz, so he should never be on an overachieving list.
Besides, I think he has it all figured out. Convince someone to pay you a boatload of money because they continue to think you can do something great, then coast until it's time to paddle again to get the expectations up a bit again for another boatload.
Genius!

Utah Overachievers Post Dantley

Guys that played important minutes for the Jazz
and overachieved in the NBA relative to their expectations when they started.

PG: Stockton 16 / Eisley 30
SG: Hornacek 46 / Bell ** / Hanson 54 / S Anderson 34 / Matthews **
SF: Russell 45 / Kirilenko 24 / Benoit **
PF: Millsap 47 / Malone 13 / Boozer 35
C : M Eaton 72 / Okur 37 / Ostertag 28

I left off Williams and Starks, because I don't remember them doing much with the Jazz.
I don't think CJ has earned this yet, and some of the others could be argued either way, so sue me.

** = undrafted
