What Did We Learn From The PreSeason?

After 2 1/2 games of watching this year's Jazz, the preseason is over and the season is going to start. What did we actually learn.

  • Favors - Looks like he is ready to make a leap to the next level and if he can stay out of foul trouble, should get a lot of minutes.
  • Hayward - I know it's early, but obviously he has struggled this preseason. His slow release is a big problem behind screens because the defenders have three seconds to finally get to him. I'm also concerned that he can't stay out of foul trouble. Maybe someone should tell him it's April.
  • Big Al - Looks like he is in great shape and should have a better year than last. It's amazing he averages as many rebounds as he does without blocking out.
  • Devin Harris - Deron relied on his cross-over to get in to the paint. Devin has relied on his quickness and speed. I'm concerned that he looks like he lost a step. If he can't penetrate, we could be in big trouble.
  • Jeremy Evans - We have got to get time for him.
  • CJ Miles - CJ looks like he is in great shape and I think he should start at the 2. He looks like he is at least trying on defense.
  • Howard - He looks like he is moving really well and I think his shot will come around.
  • Coach Ty - He is gong to work his bum off coaching.
  • Raja Bell - He looks in better shape, but same old Bell. Should be third string SG.
  • Kanter - He does not look ready to play on offense. He has an eye for the ball and can rebound right away. As long as he can rebound consistently, he will get some minutes.
  • Burks - Has a high motor and can drive consistently. He will eventually start to finish and make some of those shots. He could be a beast when he gets his shot to fall.
  • New Defense - I think in the second preseason game, you could actually see how the new defense is going to work. They definitely needs to rotate quicker so the corner three isn't so wide open.

What else did we learn from the preseason???

That we have adequate 2nd and 3rd string PGs

Kanter is aggressive on D

....that we won't play .500 ball? That we will be in the lottery with our own pick? That the Jazz have become one of the most unwatchable teams in the NBA?

I learned

+New Defense looks a lot like old defense. Maybe it is about effort?
+Jazz have 3 2nd string pgs, and no starters.
+Jazz have no starting sgs on the roster. Please Alec Burks grow up fast.
+I should refresh my link to Draftexpress to see who's in the lottery next year.
+Phil Johnson and Matt Harpring on the Jazz broadcasts makes the games more entertaining.
+My interest in Jeremy Evans>gordon Hayward.
+I'd pay to watch Favors and Kanter.

While we may not play .500 ball I have really enjoyed watching the Jazz. I want to see how Favors, Kanter, Hayward, Burks and Evans grow together. I have always viewed this year as a year to get ready for the future anyways.

Agree. Buying league pass to see us lose will never have felt so good. I am amped for the future and want to see these guys grow.

Favors should start. Favors will dominate at times this year.

Memo should be instant offense off the bench

Kanter will rebound - Kanter WILL get minutes

Hayward still has a lot of work to do.

Howard will have a good year. He should start and Millsap should come off the bench.

I'd rather develop Burnks at the end of the bench than play Bell. Bell should just be let go - he's now an average defender at best and is a dead end on offense whenever he touches the ball.

If they put in the effort on D like they did last night - Jazz will win 35-36 games.

Our backcourt is weaker than many of us were hoping it would be. (If I could pull of an Okur for Mo Williams+ deal, I'd do it in a heartbeat. This would give us some flexibility at the 2 since Mo and Harris could slide over, but also create a ton of flexibility and allow us to trade Harris when the right deal could get hammered out). CJ should probably start. Burks should play over Bell (who needs to get waived).

We learned that we didn't learn anything more about Hayward. he was screwed by the officials last night, and he wasn't helped by the offensive ineptitude in the first game.

Favors needs to start, IMO. But billyshelby has convinced me that he needs to see plenty of minutes in the second unit (re: development of his offensive moves as a go-to guy)

Jefferson did show that perhaps he will be a willing passer. Still, the jazz stand around too much when he catches the ball.

If Okur stays with the team, 80% of his minutes should be going to Kanter and Evans. He's a match-up-only kind of player at this point, IMO

CJ looks improved. Bell doesn't.

Kanter looks really strong, but Ptown doesn't exactly have a bull in the paint. I very much hope to see him battle as well with guys like Nene and Bynum. If he can we got something special.

Howard is a high energy player. That should rub off on the others. To me he's a starting wing if he can get himself up to speed. Good pickup.

Memo is Memo. He doesn't look any different to me than he did 2 years ago. People around here will like him a lot more when he's matched up with players like Dalembert rather than GW. Definitely has a role.

As others have stated, this team is DEEP. The rooks will be okay in 2nd team duty, and there is no hole that will require anybody to play over 35 minutes. Maybe Hayward since with Bell looking so lackluster SG is a bit thin.

I relearned that Raja Bell is going to get minutes even though he's a complete albatross.

What I didn't get the chance to learn is what CJ and Hayward would have looked like paired together at the wing (this year's model, anyway.)

I'm eager slash terrified to learn how long it takes Ty to learn that wing minutes need to be divided between Hayward/CJ/Howard/Burks.

Yeah just having Bell on the Jazz when they have a history of playing vets worries me as well.

That the Jazz must pay minimum wage for broadcast talent. That Harpring's voice sends a subliminal message to my finger to automatically push "mute." That Nisalke is really so far gone he can't remember what he says minute to minute. Half-time chatter features the exact phrases Uncle Laverl uses at the high school game. That the entire broadcast team - radio or teevee -- includes not one credible, consistent, knowledgable analyst. Please more Phil and less fill.

Personally, I'm grateful to know Harpring can still dunk.
