Workers getting paid to do nothing on government money

Your title is wrong. Federal money built the plant, but GM is paying the workers.

Why would someone defend GM for paying workers to do nothing?

Yes, my title is wrong. My point, though, was all the fed money given to GM .. and the article shows, at least in part, how it's being spent.

Several say training also stopped months ago, leading some employees to quit in frustration.

Why the hell would someone quit just because there is nothing to do and they stopped training you? You're still getting paid. I don't understand that.

When you, personally, invest in brand-new businesses, do they all succeed? When the government is investing in new industries (as opposed to just new ventures in existing inductries), is there any reason to think they should all be successful? Does the knowledge some of them will fail mean the program is not worthwhile? What is your point?

It's not about being successful or not. It's about paying a bunch of people in non-monopoly money to do nothing. Is that seriously that hard to understand?

When Obama bailed out the auto industry in 2008, about 75% of the country was against it.

As of this February poll, 56% of the country are for it. Significantly more positive than the bank bailouts.

My guess it's higher now being GM just announced it was planning to hire 10K more workers over the next 3 years - They've already hired 2K in Michigan and another 500 in Texas.

As far as this particular plant is concerned it's going to take time to grow a profit when investing in new technologies. I think you know this be fundamental; but just want something to bitch about. I'm sure GM can forgo investment and rake in short term gains by going back to churning out thousands of gas guzzling SUV's that don't sell well anywhere in the world except in the US - but that's how Waggoner and his other short sighted minions got them in trouble in the first place.

Now matter how hard you try I think at this point you'll have a tough time spinning the entire GM situation as a loss for Obama.

Just a question, but isn't venture investment the same as investing in a brand new business? That's how I've always known it. And investing in existing businesses is equity investment? I'm confused about the terms.

How were the questions worded? Personally, I am content with a saved GM and very happy all those workerss are earning a living and paying taxes. However, I don't think the way the situation was handled was ideal nor is this a good habit of getting into. I approve and disapprove of the situation depending on how you define it.

Definitely.

Right, but since it's not the government paying these peole to do nothing, why is it important?

Federal money was spent on building the plant. In the short term, it has not paid off (I heard other companies are interested in byuying the plant, so it still may pat off long-term). Either way it's a sunk cost, an investment that may or may not pay off. The federal government is not paying the workers.

Why are conservatives all in a hissy fit over not seeing a return on the investment that was just made for GM and silent over the years we've been soiling Afghanistan and Iraq with billions of American (non-monopoly) money and still haven't seen an investment?

Interesting double standard.

Tell me more.

So it's just another big business operating poorly. What's new.

Empires use war as investments. Welcome to the 21st century where we have democracy and stuff.

Maybe we should change that.

8,000,000 bpd or whatever Iraq is ramping up to would go a long way to securing every square inch of that country while not only costing us nothing but also creating excellent jobs for a ton of US citizens who would send a whole lot of remittances back home. Maybe imperialism is worth exploring again.
