Originally the "hashtag" was developed as a compromise at Bell Labs because the phone company wanted to have a diamond symbol added to the newly developed 12 button touch tone keypad. This new symbol was referred to as an octothorpe. The other symbol was supposed to be a star but was also altered to be an asterisk.
