Am I racist?

Honduras driving is damn near post apocalyptic. Stunning.
Agreed.
(I was a passenger in Honduras on a long drive and I was scared as hell... also the road conditions were horrendous)

Stereotypes literally exist in every single human culture in huge numbers. Rich people/groups are just as stereotyped as the poor and marginalized. Also, stereotypes are obviously not purposely created. They are an example of a meme, and they spread organically through a culture. I know Marxist slogans are very appealing to 20-somethings, but you're seriously reaching here. ;)

I think the reality is that it's somewhere in the middle, as with most things. I think you're reaching when you purely purport stereotypes as 'memes', and nothing else-- and never purposely created/exploited.

I love you dala but no. You just need to trust me here. While those 300 may be great, in general, they're ****ing awful.

Point to me the exact locus/loci in a typical "Asian"'s genome that explains your assumption of the Asian race being worse at driving.

If you don't think it's biological, then I would enjoy to hear your sociocultural justification behind what makes "Asians" (as broad of a term as there ever was) bad drivers.

Right, because they create them in a position of power where no-one within their jurisdictions can propose the contrary. Stereotypes are the domination of one discourse at the expense of others. Typically this domination is explainable in a power/powerless scenario.

Aren't some stereotypes positive in nature though?

So why do the powerful create positive stereotypes about those that they wish to dominate?

Why? It's pretty much common knowledge that alcoholism runs rampant on many Indian reservations in the states. Those in Oklahoma I think most of all.

So what is it about Indigenous People that makes alcoholism rampant?

Not necessarily. Even if you don't mean it. your perpetuate it when you chime in with racist jokes.
Have you not used the term "monica" in jest?

Hmmm. You right. Stereotypes propagate as memes, but they may sometimes be created purposefully. This isn't an easy question to answer. But still, your statement about power/powerless is not really instructive since stereotypes emerge from all kinds of sources, and are not mainly a tool of the powerful. If anything, they are much more prevalent within less educated (poor) communities, and are often created therein.

The ones here would drink listerine to get drunk. Pretty sad, but you can't just ignore that it's real.

the ones here sniff carcinogenic aerosols. It's disheartening to hear, and our government is letting all of them down.

Interesting point-- however, the stereotypes that tend to actually lead to the stigmatization of entire races/cultural groups tend to be brought forth by those in power against those who are powerless.

reservations are just as bad here, probably worse.

Also, the richest person I know is Indigenous. Does that fulfill your stereotype?

Did he/she grow up on a Rez?

And most of the Indians I know have no problem being called Indians, just like most didnt find 'Redskins' offensive...it's other people that try to decide that for them...which in a way is pretty bad too.

Also, to say that stereotypes only occur from people in power is well...baseless. I go on a Rez and I get called a greedy white boy. I literally get my life threatened because I'm white over there. It's not persecution cause I'm white though, right? All your ideologies are nice, but they sure as hell aren't realistic. Someday you might find that out.

I can't imagine a Native American not finding the term Red Skin offensive. It's pretty much a racial slur.

I would argue a decent amount of it is the government propping them up by giving them money (so they don't have to work), and their past history. They do not want to adapt. They do not want other members of their tribe to succeed and leave.

The most racist people I know are sadly my own students. The things that come out of their mouths are sad and what's worse is that they don't say them in jest. They truly believe them and likely learn them from their genius parents at home.

No-- but I'm curious what your point is regarding this.

"Most Indians I know" is not a great argument. Every scholar/political leader of Indigenous origin has a problem with terms Indian, *****, and Redskin. Every Indigenous student I have met in the University term deplores these terms. Every single one.

Also, to say that stereotypes only occur from people in power is well...baseless.

Re-read this thread.

What a ****ing terrible example. Embarrassing.

All your ideologies are nice, but they sure as hell aren't realistic. Someday you might find that out.

What's this ideology that I'm using that isn't realistic? I'm curious. And I'm curious as to why you think what I'm saying fits into said ideology. Go on. I got time.
