Cars that you like

Well, we're both suffering from confirmation bias.

We have an engineering department here at work and three of the engineers have Priuses. All three had so many problems with them that the department made up some game that would be won by the Prius owner who had the most repair invoices in a 6 month time.

Haven't the Prius vehicles been recalled like mother ****er over the years?

Actually they haven't. I have had my first prius since 2007 and it has had one recall, and that was for a bracket or something the dealer fixed in 5 minutes. Oh and I had the center console/arm rest replaced because the lid didn't line up and kept opening if bumped relatively hard.

Really the biggest issue hounding prius owners is the HID headlights, which suck. That is my one big complaint about Prii in general. I don't know what the advantage of the HID headlights are supposed to be but is isn't ease of changing bulbs, long life of bulbs, cost of bulbs. Really it seems like a kick-back scheme with Phillips for developing the POS headlight tech. But I have also heard similar complaints from other car owners whose cars have the same tech, including my neighbor's Audi.

I am actually very surprised you have seen issues with multiple Prii. I have friends who bought them after our recommendation. I have owned 2 now. And I visit Prius owner forums fairly regularly and I haven't seen any complaints of constant repairs on the Prius at all. In fact most gripes are like mine above. Minor stuff that is more irritating than actually costly or fundamentally an issue. It's possible I suppose that all I have heard or seen are the good things, or that the people I associate with are just the lucky ones.

Interesting article on recalls.

To that end, the statisticians at the car-search website iSeeCars.com dug deep into both recall histories and sales records from the last three decades to determine which automakers have the best – and worst – track records for recalls relative to their volume. Specifically, they looked at sales records dating back to 1980, and recalls registered since 1985, based on the assumption that most such actions occur after a given model has spent some time out on the road.

While it may come as no shock that luxury-car maker Mercedes-Benz came out atop the list of least-recalled brands, with an average 0.41 units recalled per vehicle sold, General Motors, with nearly 100 million vehicles recalled since 1985, actually placed third-best, with 0.65 cars and trucks recalled per unit sold.

Of the 15 major automakers surveyed, Hyundai Motor Company can lay claim to having the worst ratio, with 1.15 vehicles recalled for every model sold since it introduced the Excel to U.S. buyers in 1986. Other brands found to have recalled more cars than they sold in the U.S. over the last 30 years (needless to say this represents a number of cars for which multiple campaigns were initiated) include Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and Volvo; Chrysler broke even, so to speak, with a one-to-one sales-to-recall ratio. (Scroll down for the full results.)

Why argue? You don't find it ironic that a Prius owner is calling the Jeep make a piece of ****?

My '01 Prius has 330,000 miles on it and still gets 40-42 MPG on the regular. The ONLY repair I've had to make in the last five years was my rear brakes, which chris-L did for me a few weeks ago. Original battery, fools. Boo ya.

On the flip side, my mother, who is one of those weird people that just looooove Jeeps, just traded in her Grand Cherokee for one of those lame *** four door wranglers. Don't worry, it broke down THE DAY she naught it, 100 miles away from home, way up on top of a muddy canyon. Had to have it towed back.

It happens with every. Single. Jeep. She has ever owned. They are pure ****.

To be clear, I understand that jeeps are piles of poop. You don't buy a jeep for the reliability. You buy it because it is mildly cool and you don't have $110,000 to spend on a ****ty Range Rover lr3 or one of those Mercedes amg SUVs, or to import a defender. Anyway, jeeps are cool for rednecks like me.

And the grand Cherokee doesn't suck as bad as a lot of other big SUVs. It's actually not a bad vehicle

I'm not a jeep guy, but I know jeep guys, and generally speaking, a jeep's reliability is tied heavily to the owner and his/her ability/desire to properly maintain it (more than just regular oil changes). A well cared for jeep will last. This is true of most cars. But most people don't want to be bothered, so their car breaks down before it should. Fortunately, there are a few car companies that are very good at building cars for people who want to treat their cars bad, but still expect them to run.

I'll def give you some dap on that. I think that's pretty rad that you've kept your car that long and that it has that much mileage. I am months away from owning my 2008 Mazda 3 and it makes me giggle when I think of not having a car note to service every month. Instead I'll be banking that monthly payment and when I buy another car down the line, I'll be paying cash.

Trout drives a Prius?

Wow.

Isn't that kinda like Vin Diesel in The Pacifier?

When gas was $4.50 a gallon I didn't give a damn how stupid I looked. It turns out, I still don't.

@Vinyl, my wife and I haven't had a car payment in four years, and oh man, does it feel fine.

Drove a 94 Mercedes-Benz C220 with 280000KMs (high-ish for cars here, Cuz of the climate) that I bought at an action for $2000 with help from my parents. Never had a single problem with it. INCREDIBLY solid car, mechanically-speaking. Even the way the doors closed felt damn good. Dat German engineering.

Some idiot rear-ended me, & totalled my car two years ago. Got quite a bit of insurance money ($6500), and used every penny to buy a 2003 Mercedes C230 Kompressor. 2dr, automatic, power errthang, and only 130 000KMs.

The supercharger really is great, and the fuel economy is better than my old car (even though it's like twice as fast). Only problem is that the car is definitely less mechanically-sound-- had the suspension give out, and a pulley in the engine melted when I was driving from Spokane to Edmonton.

Still, I've spent less than $600 in repairs in the two years I've had it. Not as reliable as the old one though.

In what sense? Cramped engine bays? Or just lemons?

Lot of them have problems, particularly the ML
