Well, we're both suffering from confirmation bias.
We have an engineering department here at work and three of the engineers have Priuses. All three had so many problems with them that the department made up some game that would be won by the Prius owner who had the most repair invoices in a 6 month time.
Haven't the Prius vehicles been recalled like mother ****er over the years?
Actually they haven't. I have had my first prius since 2007 and it has had one recall, and that was for a bracket or something the dealer fixed in 5 minutes. Oh and I had the center console/arm rest replaced because the lid didn't line up and kept opening if bumped relatively hard.
Really the biggest issue hounding prius owners is the HID headlights, which suck. That is my one big complaint about Prii in general. I don't know what the advantage of the HID headlights are supposed to be but is isn't ease of changing bulbs, long life of bulbs, cost of bulbs. Really it seems like a kick-back scheme with Phillips for developing the POS headlight tech. But I have also heard similar complaints from other car owners whose cars have the same tech, including my neighbor's Audi.
I am actually very surprised you have seen issues with multiple Prii. I have friends who bought them after our recommendation. I have owned 2 now. And I visit Prius owner forums fairly regularly and I haven't seen any complaints of constant repairs on the Prius at all. In fact most gripes are like mine above. Minor stuff that is more irritating than actually costly or fundamentally an issue. It's possible I suppose that all I have heard or seen are the good things, or that the people I associate with are just the lucky ones.
