What's new

Lol NAACP leader of Spokane is Caucasian

Definitely didn't say it wasn't.

You said Rachel was insensitive/distasteful and you identified the appropriation of black culture by whites as the reason why it is distasteful. I used hip-hop as an example and you coyly responded with "Cuz, that's what it means to be black..." I figured maybe I was wrong and hip-hop was a poor example of what you were talking about. I asked you to clarify. You replied "Definitely didn't say it wasn't"

good job

I wouldnt say its closed mindedness, im just trying to understand the nuances of the argument for and against changing ones identity when on the surface it seems exactly the same.

speaking in extremes again, of course-- without taking a single second to appreciate the tragedies of appropriation across tens of cultures across North America. (there is a difference between enjoying falafel, and appropriating). (also, not a Marxist).

Not only that-- it simply doesn't work. Lotta close-minded folks up in here.

Could you go ahead and name the top 5 American tragedies of appropriation? That would be helpful in underscoring your point I think. . .

I have no problem with people self-identifying as whatever they want. I do have a problem with the media putting the microscope on this story, leading to her resignation. How she self-identifies really isn't anyone's business, nor is Caitlyn Jenner's decision. The difference is that Caitlyn seems to relish the attention, whereas this woman obviously wanted to keep it a secret. It also should have no impact on employment or growth within the NAACP, and their organization lost a (supposedly) valuable member of their leadership group.

The NAACP seems to have supported her. She said that she resigned of her own volition.(due to the media attention that you alluded to)

The issue is not that she is white working for the NAACP. Her color has nothing to do with her ability to do the job and help out. It had 0 impact on her job that she is white. It is the fact she was pretending to be black when she was not by tanning and/or using makeup as well as changing her hair and they way she talks.

I see both sides of the argument here and am not quite sure where I fall. I dont think it is as black and white (no pun intended) as some people make it out to be.

It's not like she is going to use this attention to launch a new reality show. Now THAT would be courageous. . .

This is correct.

I just was implying that there is much more to black identity than hip-hop, and appropriation is much more than just "white people getting into hip=hop"-- I find that that comparison makes light of what's actually a rather serious, sensitive issue.

A top 5 seems kinda ridiculous, but I'll highlight the example of appropriating Indigenous culture just because here in Canada the Indigenous are kinda our "black people", and we've tried to eradicate their culture as much as possible for pretty much the entirety of Canadian history. The danger associated with cultural appropriation is how it changes the significance of Indigenous idols, customs, and symbols in a veiled manner-- thus stripping the significance of said things. That's why some are so scared of appropriation-- when you're forcing assimilation, it's very very overt. Appropriation meanwhile has the potential ability to eradicate cultural meaning covertly. When you're bringing Indian headdresses to raves, or rocking mohawks at punk concerts, it loses meaning. And unfortunately, it's usually white ppl who are the appropriators.

This sounds meaningless to you, but that's because you've never been had your culture questioned, or attempted to be robbed from you. Talk to an indigenous individual, or a person who feels like his/her culture is being appropriated. You'll develop a better understanding.

I liked this. It was real. I'm going to be a prick and call people out on it though. You want to keep your culture? keep it. Nobody is going to take it from you, nobody can appropriate it from you if you hold it close and teach your children. Somebody selling a keychain with a totem on it doesn't lessen your culture any more than a Broadway play mocking your sacred scripture does. If your tie to your culture is so weak that it cannot survive that than it really wasn't that important to you anyway and you probably need to evolve to something that you care about more. Pieces of cultures die all of the time. Many times it is a good thing because if those pieces of culture were of worth, they would survive cultural evolution. I'm damn glad the Aztecs aren't cutting the hearts out of people and rolling them down the stairs of the temple. Screw them and that culture.

I went to a local meeting here about some last bit of spending that needed to take place at the end of the bond. Basically a bunch of people complaining that their projects had been overlooked. One dude wanted the money spent on his cultural fair/art project and said "It is government's job to document our struggle!" The Hell it is. It is the city governments job to pave the roads and provide police protection, and if there is money left over to put in a new jungle gym in the park. It is YOUR job to "document your struggle." If you can't do it, or can't find anyone to care without using the fist of government, then I have better things to do. I'll fight for your rights, every one of them, but your culture isn't a right nor is it my responsibility, financially or otherwise.

Yes, because there's all this historical injustice against Dutch people in addition to the clogs, right?

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

I'm going to be really insensitive...

I don't have to worry about my culture being appropriated because my culture is a living culture that isn't static. "My" culture changes by the day and besides a few old folks like babe, no one is too worried about it.

Except as a historical artifact these cultures that are being appropriated already don't have a hell of a lot of real meaning. Maybe that's a tragedy to you, but the world is still spinning, generations die and generations are born and the tighter you try to grasp the sands of time the faster they slip through your fingers.
