What's new

do your kids "belong" to you or do they "belong" to society!

what say you my friends

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3qtpdSQox0.

i think your children are yours. she has 2 children herself. should the state take em away? give her a taste of her own medicine?
or do you whole hardheartedly agree with her notion?

That's from a couple of years ago. Name is Melissa Harris Perry an she's a news anchor on MSNBC. I see where she's coming from. Don't agree but I can understand it.

Having said that they are mine. Period.

i know it is from cpouple of years ago. but seems just as relevant today

She's not saying anything about taking children away from their parents. She's speaking more specifically about our educational systems. She's making the point that society needs to see it as their responsibility to make an investment in children as a group - and not just think that only parents make an investment in their own children.

Investment in children sure, I can get behind that. But personally I think she means more than just that.

They don't belong to anyone. They're separate human beings who, due to the way humans reproduce, must be cared for until they're able to care for themselves. Both parents and society has an obligation toward them, but that obligation must never supersede the rights every human should have.

I am slowly giving my kids to society one at a time.

Suck that society!!

Since parents (or legal guardians) have legal responsibilities that cannot be transferred to the rest of society without completely giving up custody then in a sense, yes, the children "belong" to the parents. Parents can be held responsible for the actions of their underage kids and can also be charged with negligence.

Since responsibility lies with the parents I think they should be given a large degree of freedom in how they think it's best to raise those kids.

There are millions of ways to **** your kids up that are not illegal and a handful of ways to **** them up that are illegal. Short of starving them or causing severe injury I think parents should be allowed to make the decisions on how their children should be raised.
