What constitutes "core piece" is something I am weirdly militant about. I define it as a player that is untouchable in trades except for players that are unanimously appraised superstars. I don't think Green fit that criteria two seasons ago, and David Lee sure as **** didn't meet that criteria even mid-season last year, but sure, there probably was some overlap for about a month when the Warriors weren't totally sure where the 4-spot was headed early in the season.

And now I'm done with this tangent.

If minutes constitutes the only measure of whether a player is a core-piece of a team or not, then was Richard Jefferson a core piece for this Jazz team at any point in his career?
 
JHo averaged >20mpg for the Jazz that one year. Core piece?

Richard Jefferson wasn't on a rookie contract with birds rights.

To me it's simply a player that has a huge impact on the success on a team, to the extent that the team has a strong interest in keeping him over the next couple years at the least. Our core pieces right now are Exum, Burks, Hood, Hayward, Favors, and Gobert IMO.

Again, he was an over the hill FA signing. Did I ever say minutes was the only factor? Age and contract also contribute. You expect drafted players who get minutes early on in their careers to be core pieces moving forward.


Trey Burke, even though he sucks and is probably our worst rotational player, is still a core piece.

Not necesarily true. Jazz can put up an offer of around 12 mill witout sacrificing Booker. Then if they cut Millsap, Johnson, Cooley and Cotton...

Seriously, what's the downside (unless it means it requires a trade to facilitate)? You may be right that the Jazz are sending out overtures using guys wearing trenchcoats and sunglasses at night handing out envelopes, or using Darth Vader voice changers and calling from pay-phones, but I think they're resigned to their fate. They've had max cap room for five offseasons, and not a ****ing peep.

I gave you the downside guy... they have to release Booker. I don't think we are being super secret with trenchcoats and ****, but if you tell teams, agents, and media to keep it on the down low they will do it or lose trust.

None of the big guys are coming here for 12 M or less. Tobias likely gets 14+... DMC got 15... Wes wants 15. Danny went for less but its clearly a hometown discount and you have to factor no state tax as part of that.

No, Lee was just on a near max deal signed for multiple years. Kind of weird to think that is a core piece when they are getting 33 mpg.
