40-year-old virgins in Japan are a societal problem, apparently.

A 41-year-old participant named Takashi Sakai told the AFP it is helping him.

“When you are young, you are afraid of rejection. I think it’s true that many people now just pretend they have no feelings about sex instead of risking outright rejection,” he said. “The first time I [came to drawing class], in autumn last year, oh … I was so amazed. Their bodies are incredibly beautiful.”

Sakatsume cautions that people should stop and think before they snicker at his project.

“Virginity shouldn’t be a punch line. We have to start treating it as a social problem and something that can only be overcome with proper education and support from society,” he says.

So is it a big problem that a lot of men in Japanese society are virgins? Also, is it indicative of something larger going on, especially considering the Japanese population in this age range is skewed toward female (around 53%)? Are the women also celibate in that age range?

Also I am not sure how this project is supposed to "fix" the problem. From what I have read they are not allowed to have any contact with the models. I get the idea of getting these men past their fears and helping them demystify the female body, but I would be willing to bet there is something deeper than this going on societally speaking of this is really such a big problem.

Or does it really matter at all in the end?

I'd assume many women are being serviced by a much smaller group of men. I even think that to an extent women are perfectly happy with that situation.

Just imagine the 1% of Japanese Don Drapers and their female fans with a bunch of awkward less desirable men left on the sidelines.

That was why I brought it up. Is it just cultural, or is it really a "societal problem" that has some kind of negative effect on their society as a whole? I cannot for the life of me think of a single negative as long as it isn't driving a higher rape rate for these guys to finally get some, other than of course the negative for the guys individually. But even then, really, it is a personal problem not a societal one.

Personally, I think that article misses the giant in the room - tech. Technology is Japan's religion. People are choosing tech over interacting with the opposite sex. That's what is happening. Japan will be full of robot humpers that make the situation worse long before their birthrate issues are ever solved.
