What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

This week Cinestar Leipzig is showing Jurassic World in English (and 3D which I wish would die a sudden and violent death). Taking the fam. Looking forward to it.


Seriously though. Does anyone think that 3D makes a film better? Does anyone prefer to watch a movie in 3D? Given the choice I guess enough people do choose to see the 3D but I wonder how much of that is theaters just pushing it since it brings in so much more money, yet really doesn't cost a lot more to produce. Like the theater here showing movies in 3D. I asked the manager about that and he told me that they negotiate a selection of movies in English for their movie chain and it gets pushed on them as well, they have no choice in the matter at individual theaters once the movies are negotiated.

I don't care for 3D.

Kinda feels like it puts a little strain on my eyes or head or something. It feels a little uncomfortable to watch. I pass on 3Dovies. But it's not so bad that I won't do it every once in a while.

With 3D movies, my own experience is that it varies from theater to theater. I believe the quality of glasses makes a difference. Probably a difference in state of the art equipment as well. I've see a few 3D movies that were really good, but I also know what people are talking about with bad experiences. I think if you go to one of the brand new spiffy *** theaters, you might find the 3d experience is worth it. If you do happen to have a good experience with a 3D movie, don't recycle the glasses, keep them. The difference might just be better equipment, but it seems to me the glasses have been better every time I've seen a good 3D movie.

So I got to see a couple of movies recently...

I've always had an interest in fashion couture. Or, rather, I guess, an appreciation for higher end female clothes. While I understand that much of the fanfare for couture is frivolous and rooted in spectacle, the creative process has always fascinated me. Anyway, the documentary is about Anna Wintour who is the editor of Vogue magazine and all the preparation she and her various teams of editors, copywriters, stylists, photographers, etc. go through in order to put out the September issues, which is the biggest issue they put out yearly. If you saw, Devil Wears Prada, you'd have a good approximation of what Mrs. Wintour is like.

I liked the movie.

83% on RT which seems fair.

While this was a continuation of watching another selection from the Criterion collection, the reality is that I saw this movie mentioned in an article -- I don't remember which one -- I made a note of it, had some time and gave it a watch.

Let's start with what the world thought and thinks. Ebert gave it 4/4 stars both in 1981 when the movie came out and again in 1999 when he watched it again. RT gave it 90%. If you get a chance, read Ebert's original review:

In short, wow. I came away from this movie with so much to think about that a few days later, I watched it again. I will probably watch at least a few more times if only to come away with a more nuanced understanding of the ideas brought up in the movie. Existential stuff really.

If you have no patience, you will NOT get through this movie because as Ebert opens his review up with:

The idea is astonishing in its audacity: a film of two friends talking, just simply talking—but with passion, wit, scandal, whimsy, vision, hope, and despair—for 110 minutes.

Yup. Just two people talking while out to dinner.

Ok so we went to Jurassic World. Aside from the 3D effect, which again **** all over the movie, I found it to be a fitting addition to the Jurassic library. I would rank it probably #1 among the Jurassic films (the first and original "Jurassic Park", while a true technical achievement for its time, simply had way too many plot holes and outright blunders for me), but as a stand-alone movie I would give it probably a C+ to B- rating overall (say 3 out of 5 starsA). I found it entertaining and fun and was able to lose myself in the chase. I think they went a little heavy-handed with the whole super-sized velociraptor thing, and the whole dinosaurs choosing sides, which to me was cheesy and silly, but for the most part it was fun to watch.

As far as the acting goes, I am a fan of Chris Pratt, but I think he has a natural comic streak that shows through in most scenes, almost as a permanent smirk although that is not exactly right either, but either way that makes him very likable, but also hard to take seriously in scenes meant to be serious. I thought he did an outstanding job in Guardians of the Galaxy balancing that out and making the danger seem believable, but here he was a tiny bit less successful, but I still preferred him over other actors we have seen in the lead role in these movies. Generally thought his performance was good, B+. The other characters/actors were just fine really. Nothing outstanding, nothing terrible.

Overall worth seeing in the theater. Sorry if I dropped any minor spoilers.

4th woman switches shoes during the whole frickin movie.


after a while i stopped paying attention and tried to sleep. i had a list of 16 craptastic insulting ****!

full of glaring gaping holes

it sucks!

Yeah but it was about 1/12 of those from the other movies.

Wow.. truly a Masterpiece of a film. A real gem. Can't fault it. Story is solid. Cinematography is probably one of the best you'll ever see. Great soundtrack as well and acting is top notch.


But what I love most is the theme and the message that it gives you. The ending & conclusion at the end is pretty neat. As a (relatively) new Christian and who had been a buddhist before this movie really hits home about what the true meaning of life really is.


Highly Recommended (96% on RT).

so because something in the movie happens that is maybe out of realm of impossibility it is ok to give the lead woman magic shoes.


or have a tracker in a dinosour that after it is removed the magic tracker can still track him.
magical car that is ok 22 years in the jungle and only needs a batery?

so because the basic premise might be impossible we can throw any other logic out of the window?

Yeah this is true.. but like that glass globe rolling around without mud you can explain it away saying it's a special material that repels dust and simply 'floats' on material.

Tracker removed you could say once he was out they put satellite tracking on him especially.

Car and wheels.. well they must have been special rubberised wheels that don't need air?

I dunno man... good observations though.

Damn, dude. Surprising coming from you, but **** yeah. Yeah, some of the images from Ida are still stuck in my head. I was thankful that I got to see it in the theatre.

Yeah it was a really special experience for me too. My brother and I were looking through the Netflix catalogue last night deciding what to watch. My brother was attracted by the poster design and although he didn't care for the subject (picture of a nun) since he is a pretty strong atheist, he chose it anyway which really surprised me.


My brother is a Fine Art graduate and he really enjoyed the cinematography of the film. He watched every scene contemplating the story, the subjects, and finally I think the ending really surprised him and affected him in a real way both logically and emotionally. He has been questioning why I decided to become a Christian 3 years ago and after the movie ended I was able to explain to him a lot of what my faith was about. I think it was the first time that he finally understood where I was coming from. The film was really helpful in this regard for which I am really thankful to the director/producers for.


It has become a pretty special film to me and I think this will be one of those films that I will watch may be 1-2 times every year.

Haha.. close but not quite. He had to do a culinary diploma after he graduated and he was working in a high end restaurant as an assistant chef before coming back home to join the family business.

Haha.. well he's a very practical person and likes to work with his hands, etc, rather than a desk job. We sell plants (plants nursery) which is a bit different to gardening (i.e., we don't go out to people's homes, we just stay in our nursery).


I would say he plants about 60-70% of what we sell so he is pretty key to our business.
