This is random, but I bet a lot of people, even people who have lived in Utah their entire lives, don't realize this.

Tipped employees in Utah do not make minimum wage on top of their tips. They make $2.13/hr.

Not only that, but no matter how bad their actual tips might be, they get taxed as though they got at least 10% of their sales as tips.

They can report more than that, but they can't be taxed less than that.

It is this way far beyond Utah. Many waiters/waitresses make only 2.13 an hour.

Huge discrepancy of where you work as well.
If you work at ruths chris then you will be rich from the tips

Work at dennys? Not so much

I really doubt the servers at a place like Ruths Chris are what any of us would consider rich, but yeah, I'm sure they make more than a server at Denny's.

One thing is that the servers at a place like Ruths Chris typically have fewer tables, maybe only 2-3 at a time. And the table turnover is much slower.

Law needs to be changed. Pay them an actual wage and get rid of tipping, except as befits good service. It is one of the things I like much better here. Tipping is appreciated and truly not expected. I don't have to feel like I am forcibly ripping food from some poor server's kids' throats if I forget to drop a 2 euro piece on the table.

It can be worse. In Ukraine the waitress is treated as whore profession because most are. I assumed this is why American waitress all look like temporaries on crack looking for quick doe?

For just my wife and I the waiter gets a 30 dollar tip. We are usually there for about an hour. So that would be 30 dollars per hour if they only have the one table. Plus my wife and I are probably poorer than the average guest there so most couple probably tip more.
Plus some tables will have more than two people eating.
Then you figure that they probably have at least 2 or three tables per hour rather than just one.
Then you add in their non-tip pay.

I figure, by my calculations, a waiter at Ruth's chris should be making around 60 dollars per hour at the least. (If one table for one hour equals 30 dollars + a couple more tables with one of them having three or four people at it and them being higher tippers than me + their hourly wage)
And it seems that 60 dollars in tips per hour would be conservative.

Plus they probably only work like 5 hours per night so they could even have another job too.

I bet they would make around 100,000 per year if they work every night for like 5 or 6 hours per night
So ya, not exactly rich I guess

Only portion of Tip at five star restaurant to to waiter. You really think it so easy to make 100,000 usd without sell drug or dance on the pole?

Most servers have to "tip out" a bunch of different people. They give a portion of their tips to bussers, water boys, hosts, bartenders and expiditers.

When I worked at lone star steakhouse I sucked and seldom got 10% of my sales in tips and then had to tip out based on at least that plus get taxed at that rate. I've left with $8 in tips after working a shift at a steakhouse.

Lol no way.

I think I remember my aunt telling me that the most expensive restaurants in New Orleans, the waiters make like 50K-60K annually.

So maybe places with higher cost of living make a lot more, maybe top end waiters in NYC or LA make 6 figures.

Yet, they choose to do that for a job. :) Good thing they're not forced.

Why the hell do we tip in the first place? Murica.

You aren't very good at math are you?

What do you mean?
$30 tip?! Is Ruth Chris's so expensive that it's $150 for two people?
Yes. Pretty much.
(I cash in my credit card reward points once a year and get a 100 dollar gift card and take my wife there for Valentine's day. Best food I have ever had)

A steak by itself is close to 50 dollars. We usually share a side/appetizer.
Dessert. Drinks. Bye bye money
