Treveon Graham signs with Utah Jazz
By Mat Shelton-Eide -
Aug 15, 2015

Tonight Treveon Graham posted the selfie all aspiring ballers hope to one day post on their Instagram accounts, the one where he is signing an NBA contract.

Contract details aren’t known at this point but the picture clearly shows Graham signing a document labeled National Basketball Association Player Contract and with Graham’s personal caption beneath reading, “All my life I been dreaming of this moment and it has finally came … Just want to thank everyone that have been behind me from the beginning #dreamchasin #OKE #blessed #utahjazz”.

Graham led last season’s Atlantic 10 champion VCU team with 16.2 points per contest and finished as VCU’s second all-time leading scorer behind Eric Maynor, coincidentally drafted by the Utah Jazz with the 20th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.

Graham went undrafted in the 2015 Draft but received an invitation to participate in this year’s NBA Summer League with the San Antonio Spurs where he averaged 7.9 points in his 15.6 minutes per contest, finishing with 17 points against the Jazz in Las Vegas. He finished his time with the Spurs by posting a 22-point statement in a Summer League Championship win on 7-11 shooting against the Phoenix Suns.

It's probably partially guaranteed to secure him for training camp.

I can't tell what position does he play? DX says he's a 6'6 SG, and yet he played PF for VCU?

Travon Graham is capable of playing many positions, including some PG. IIRC he's a much better shooter off the dribble than in C+S, he's also a monster on the boards at 6'6". he's actually the type of guard you can draw up an Isolated post-up for.. Has a sharp crossover, this is a player with an interesting mix of skills for sure. 38% from 3 on 5+ attempts too.

Grahan has been at CP3's Elite Guard camp the last 2 summers, which features some big names, top HS and college players. They have this part of the camp where the guards play a big 1v1 tournament, and Graham won it.

Looks like he could play at least 3 positions effectively in the NBA... he looks very big for a 6'6 guy.

DL's strategy seems pretty clear... keep poaching players from Spurs' Summer League & DLeague teams (Cotton).

His teammates called him "Freight Train" or just "Freight". Interestingly enough Graham was a 0 star recruit as per Rivals.. the only offers he held were from VCU and Cleveland St.

If the Jazz can help him adjust to the NBA 3pt line, it should really increase his chances of sticking around. I definitely like this move more than giving up any sort of asset for Garrett Temple.

I dunno if he is quick enough to be a good defender at the NBA level though given his bulk/size for the SG position at least (the video above didn't seem to show any defensive highlights).

Also I notice that he does an awful lot of lay-ups rather than just going up strong and dunking it even when wide open... just makes you wonder about his finishing at the rim at the next level.

One thing he's definitely good at defensively is trapping the ball, VCU plays something they called(under Shaka Smart) 'the havoc defense' and its basically a maximum pressure press after every make and on all dead-ball situations. So he will always be alert around players bringing the ball up the floor, and you can see that in these SL highlights(0:09).

The VCU press was definitely working too, his teammate Briante Weber was averaging almost 4 steals per game and was about to break the NCAA record for career steals, but he blew his knee out (ACL and MCL) in January..

Graham was one of their team leaders also. I LOVE the VCU guys because of their ability to play pressure defense. They played a small-ball lineup to maximize their athleticism. Those guys outwork and out hustle everyone. He should have no trouble with the altitude with how they coach worked them. Havoc was all about chaos, confusion and opportunity. If he makes the team, it will be based on defensive ability and hustle.

His other nickname is the "Graham Cracker"

Wrong color.

As for the signing, who knows? Perhaps this means Hayward is going to be traded.:D
JK. Bring him in to compete against Millsap and Johnson. He definitely has the tools to be a "3&D" guy and could play in a small line-up. Jazz are definitely trying to improve their bench. Some decent players are going to get cut this year.

Do you know what color Graham Crackers are?

Per game stats
29.4 minutes
16.2 points
42.8% FG%
46.2% 2PT%
38.1% 3PT% (5.1 attempts per game)
69.1% FT% (5.5 attempts per game)
7.1 rebounds
1.6 assists
0.6 steals
0.3 blocks
1.2 turnovers
2.0 personal fouls
6'4.75" height without shoes (Hayward was 6'6.75", Burks was 6'5")
6'5.75" height with shoes (Burks was 6'6")
6'10.5" wingspan (Hayward's is 6'7.75", Burks was 6'10")
8'7" standing reach (same as Hayward's, Burks was 8'7.5")

I really like what I see there. With the length, I would think he could play some 3 if necessary. I like what I see in his stats too outside of his FT% which is a little worrisome. The stats and highlights make it seems like he's very aggressive in his rebounding. The early highlights also showed someone who didn't look particularly athletic but was crafty in finishing around the basket. I like the pickup a lot. He had great coaching in Smart.

PGAB, I read your comments about VCU's press defense but how good of a half court defender was the kid? Could he evolve into a Artest type defender? Big, rough, bruising type.

Have you never had a Graham Cracker? They aren't white.

The question though is he better than Jack Cooley, Chris Johnson, or Bryce Cotton?

Because he has to beat all 3 of those guys out, not to mention that other wing we signed to a partially guaranteed contract.
