That would cause a massive jump in the quality of the DLeague. Most of those guys must be working a second job or something (though I don't know how they could during the season), or their wife is working a couple of jobs. And if they have kids... forgetaboutit. The NBA is so profitable that subsidizing a development league seems like the right thing to do.
Locke just tweeted that a team is now allowed to "protect up to 4 players that they can send to their d league team. Of course if another team wants them then they can sign a ten day with who ever. But these contracts that they get before being protected make it so they can make a living and still play on the farm team learning the Jazz stuff.
Graham's contract for example has a $75000 guarantee on it up front, so he gets that and a protected spot on the Stampede. And can still play for a spot on any team looking. This may be the way that teams can now keep that extra talent in house

Yeah, the owners aren't selfish at all. They only lied about losing money and didn't report their revenues honestly last CBA.

Then why is it called "protected?" I do like the idea of having extra players, though. Is it four additional, or are they counting the two roster players who can already be sent to the D-League?

Didn't say the owners weren't greedy. They are. Never believed for one minute they were collectively losing money. Perhaps some of the smaller market teams, but that needs to be addressed by the owners. Besides, the appreciation makes any yearly losses more than bearable. The owners are the ones paying mid-level players top dollar. Few franchises have shown restraint like the Jazz.
Protected as in they go to the Jazz d league team instead of just going into the d league draft like all the other players that haven't been protected by an NBA team

Interesting that the signing bonus is $75,000 which is what Locke says was given to Kevin Murphy and Dee Bost last year. When you add that to DLeague wages it is about what a player on an NFL practice squad could make for a year. It seems both were cut early in training camp and Bost immediately bolted overseas and Murphy went to play for the Stampede for awhile and then went to China. I think it was anticipated that Brock Motum, Cooley, and these two would go play for the Stamps and only Cooley went and played and was hurt for awhile. So you have a DLeague team that was really awful record wise.

That's the number one thing that would even the playing field. And that's what the NFL does.

interesting that Jared Cunningham just signed with Philly on a deal similar to graham. jazz must not have liked Cunningham.
