What's new

Jeff Withey Signed

We have about 19 players on the roster already. Somebody has got to get cut.

Exum, Neto, Burke, Cotton
Burks, Hood, Millsap, Graham
Hayward, Ingles, Johnson, O'Brien
Favors, Booker, Lyles, Jerrett
Gobert, Pleiss, Withey, Cooley

Jerrett's guaranteed for about 900K.
Withey guaranteed for 200K
Graham guaranteed for 75K
O'Brien guaranteed for 75K
Cotton, Millsap, Johnson and Cooley are non guaranteeds but the Jazz seem to absolutely love Millsap, so I doubt he gets cut.

I think Exum, Neto, Burke, Burks, Hood, Millsap, Hayward, Ingles, Favors, Booker, Lyles, Gobert and Pleiss are certain to be on the roster. That's 13 players.

Cotton, Graham, Johnson, O'Brien, Jerrett, Withey, Cooley are fighting for max of 2 spots(quite possibly 1 - teams sometimes leave the final spot open in order to be able to call up players from the D-League whenever injuries hit). If I had to choose I'd take Johnson + one of Cotton or Withey.
I would move Millsap to the 2nd list. The Jazz may seem to like him now but he's far from a guaranteed spot. That leaves 3 spots for 8 guys. Personally I'd take Cotton, Withey, and O'Brien or Johnson. I think O'Brien brings a lot of what Millsap does with better offensive potential and a younger player. I think the Jazz may fill the roster this year. They have lots of depth at all positions and in case of injury can always release a guy to fill in if necessary.

All those non-guaranteed guys have guaranteed money just like the people who have recently been signed. Every NBA contract is partially guaranteed. There are no fully non-guaranteed contracts in the NBA.

And don't they count that guaranteed money towards the required minimum? And aren't the Jazz below the threshold?

I think I like Withey more than Pleiss. He put up a pretty good per these last two years.

My guess is that you won't think that way for long. I liked Withey coming out of KU, but he's improved so little... very little upside there. After listening to Lindsey, it seems there is considerably more upside with Pleiss because of his offensive ability and sheer length.

Using that logic then Pleiss has more upside than Gobert?

I really like Withey (at least in a context like this). I also like that Lyles is going to have to earn his playing time because I'm far from sold on him or his mentality as a player.

Literally was worried about Lyles until this post by NUMERICA. Dude is now officially destined for success.

Withey is a wildly undervalued player in the NBA. Has size, protects the rim, shoots > 50% from the field, not a complete liability from the stripe. How is he signing a deal like this for a team that doesn't need him? Mind-blowing to me.

Cant cut Exum. You dont get injury exemption spot for 1 player.

The NBA should have an Injured Reserve system like the NFL does. Two different IR categories - one that returns after several weeks and all others that are shut down for the season - but they get a roster spot back for each players sent to IR.

I do like that the Jazz can semi-protect up to 4 players that they want to stash on the Stanpede.

Also probably something key with Withey is he's relatively fleet of foot, for a 7-footer.

He's one of the oldest players drafted the last few years, which is something I usually 'redflag'. I liked Withey in the 2nd round though because of blocks like this one, which aren't exactly standard for Centers..

Here's another example of his mobility, hedges beyond the 3pt line then gets back to the paint for 2 blocks.
