What's new

Chromebook

I got two chromebooks for my place of business in June. I love them. They were super cheap at $200 each, and should last better than the laptops that I had been buying every few years. They get a lot of use, and only slowed down a little bit over the course of three months. By a lot of use, I mean they are pretty much in use like 14 hours per day.

As far as them not getting viruses, I think that is pretty much bologna. Anything gets viruses. My office has 20 different people using the computers at different unsupervised times, and they definitely got some type of virus after not very long. They don't get them nearly as often or as bad as the windows machines we use, but they get them for sure. They didn't get any serious viruses, just slowed them down a bit.

If you don't need to have extensive computing power for gaming, then they should be good. You can even run web based app versions of Word, Excel and power point. Chromebooks are pretty great.

What brand did you get?

I don't think Chromebooks can get viruses, as viruses are typically understood, since it is a cloud based system. The OS core files are inaccessible by the user, and thus cannot be infected by a virus. But they are still subject to some security threats, like browser hijacking.

I dont know much about that kind of thing. I will take your word for it. It definitely had some browser hijacking going on from an infected router for a bit, but we cleared that up quick. They are definitely slower than they were when we bought them, but still work great.

I bought a Dell windows tablet and a wireless keyboard. Spent about 250. The battery lasts twice as long and the screen looks way better too.

My daughter had to purchase a Chromebook for school (4th grade!). From the experience I had with it, I'd say it would work great for your needs, Howard. I'd buy something similar but I really don't like the Cloud version of Excel; it's limited. So I'm sticking with a laptop when I upgrade.
