My Apologies

I love this site. Don't change anything.

Well, maybe one thing.

I know I've been guilty of this, but I would come down harder and faster on posters that attack other posters personally (name calling, etc).

It's okay to go after and debate ideas. I love that. But calling a poster stupid, etc drives people away.

That's my two cents.

Welp. That sure was an invitation.

So you are telling that mods didn't do their job by not viewing a thread and let it get out of hand. Now you have to lock the thread altogether, not remove which is weird. Everyone you are protecting can still see it.

I don't really care about the thread. I had some fun reading it but it's not make or break for me. It was for others apparently and the behaviour of mods is one of the key reasons for that. And you shouldn't take all the blame.

I had an idea today. Maybe if every post that got moderated had a note added to it by the moderators, people could see what was "over the line". For example, if a poster was issued a warning or infraction, the mod could into that post and add a little note that said "this post was reported and a warning/infraction was issued for x reason". That way, the general populace can see that it was over the line and by how far (warning vs. infraction). If things are still done the way they were when I was a mod, nobody but the mods and the poster knows (unless said poster goes off on a rant).

I like that idea.
I will say, though, that every infraction I have ever had was accompanied by a PM from a mod with explanation.

They all are. It's auto generated. The mod just writes the explanation. But the private part of a private message makes it so not everyone else knows an action was taken. This would.

You seem to have a tenuous grasp on exactly what the function of a moderator is.

That is because you are not giving me much to work it. I thought that mods would moderate a thread that generated constant reports and made most of the mods not want to see it.

We did, we closed it.

We did, we closed it.

Yep, by locking it but still maintaining access to it. You just ignored the thread till it became too big for you to handle.

There are numerous post that are very similar to recent ones posted but no actions were taken back then. They are still there if you want to see. It's just inconsistent moderating.

No we didn't. It has been mentioned several times that multiple posts have been "modded". How is that ignoring it?

As for inconsistent modding, perhaps. But there is no line set in stone. You don't like the way it was handled and that is fine. But it was handled.

I debated just attaching to one of the many open threads on this but decided - HEY, THEY ALL STARTED ONE, I SHOULD TOO. Seriously though, I wanted to make sure it didn't get lost.

Recently we closed a thread that had been open for years. There was always an unwritten caution on that thread indicating the pictures inside it may not be appropriate. I understood that and a handful of the moderators understood that. I stopped viewing it and I know others did as well. We have a system whereby items can be reported and it was used plenty for that thread. That's how we chose to deal with it then, again unwritten or discussed. Now, after getting a PM from someone on the site asking us to revisit the appropriate nature of the thread in whole, we discussed it. Those that got a chance a vote agreed that its time should probably be over and that it had degraded if it didn't start that way initially anyway. If anything is true, we know there is no one line when it comes to what is appropriate or inappropriate when we talk about each of us as an individual.

Thanks for the thoughtful post. I want to catch up with the rest of this thread when I have time, but I thought I'd quickly share with you that several of your moderators don't broadcast this same understanding of the nuances of rules and grey areas that surround them. Hopefully somebody has already mentioned this.
