Wilson Chandler?

Zach Lowe put out a "35 Crazy Predictions" article and he said he thinks the Nuggets will trade Chandler or Gallianri this year. He said in years past, the Nuggets have been asking too much for either, but said he could see them coming down on offers for Chandler this year. He said the thinks they have been asking for 2 first, or a first and a quality young player. So if the comedown from that is just a quality young player, or just a so/so young player and a first, can we get him?

I've always been a big fan of Chandler. I think he could be our back-up PF who also plays back-up SF. Our wing rotation could be Hayward/Burks/Hood/Chandler, with Chandler getting the least minutes at the wing of that 4, but him also getting significant backup 4 minutes. This would mean Trevor Booker is relegated to the bench, or very limited playing time, which is sad because we all love Booker.

I know he is a fairly up and down 3pt shooter over his career, but he can shoot it and has to be respected. It would definitely add a dimension to our offense that we don't currently have.

The question is, what would we be willing to part with?

Trey Lyles and OKC's 1st Rounder? Would that get it done? I'd be willing to do that.

For context, Chandler just signed a 4 year extension worth a little over 10 million a year (he cant even be traded until January), which is going to be gold in the next CBA (IMO). So if we traded for Chandler with the idea of him being our back-up PF/SF, there really wouldn't be any significant developmental minutes for Lyles during his rookie contract.

He just signed a three year extension so I'm not sure he is going to be dealt soon. Nuggets would try to extract more from the Jazz because we are in division AND they looked bad after the Gobert fleecing. I'd still bet that it would still take two firsts would get it done, and I bet Denver wouldn't allow for a lot of pick protection games.

Nuggets are a team that has resisted tanking. They signed Gallinari and Chandler to value extensions. No point in letting them hit UFA for nothing and risking having to pay them the new upcoming market value if they have good years. Also harder to trade guys who are going to be on the last year of their deal and going into UFA. Lowe pointed out they might consider it if they lose a lot early, which they should.

As far as trades, I think Lyles and a draft pick (lottery protected) would be fair. Lottery picks are pretty valuable these days, and Lyles does fill a position of need (especially if they deal Fahried which there has been rumors of the Nuggets trying to do). The Jazz's pick this year, if not in the lottery, won't be anything above 20, so it will still have pretty good value. It's not like Chandler is a blue chip starter. He is very clearly a 6th man type player.

Think about what OKC really got for Reggie Jackson, who is actually starting caliber. Basically all OKC got from Detroit in that deal was Kyle Singler and Detroit agreeing to send us Kendrick Perkisn to facilitate the Kanter trade. So they got Kanter (6th man type flawed player who no one else wanted really wanted to trade for) and Singler (low minutes role player) for a young starting PG with promise.

Assuming Nuggets do this trade and figure out a trade for Fahried (I think it would be wise, the guy isnt a good fit next to Nurkic and he looks like he has more upside than Fahried), their starting lineup next year would look like this:

Mudiay
Potentially a high draft pick from 2016
Gallinari
Lyles
Nurkic

I mean, I would be pretty excited about that lineup if I'm a Nuggets fan. Maybe they draft a guy like Ingram/Murray/Brown/Newman on the wing (or combo guard) and you are looking a team that has 4 really versatile players and a big center. Then use the later draft picks to fill out the bench, maybe sign a free agent in the off-season with cap-space instead of starting Lyles or a rookie, you could have a good team pretty quick with only a 1 year tank.

I like Chandler but I worry about his durability. I think the trade price is a bit steep. I'd give them a top 5 protected 2016 pick and an extra second or Tibor or some sweetner. I think Booker would end up in the deal to help match salaries up. I would work to keep Lyles.

I think I'd rather pursue Covington out in Philly with that type of package. Better shooter, but may not be big enough to play small ball 4... it's close. I think he could be a Middleton type that could pull it off in spots. Not sure about his availability though.

Everyday. I don't think they cost the same though. I think Gallo might be too big for the role we would have him play, but that is probably fine since he is resigned.

I think he is viewed as more of a core piece.

Also, it would be impossible to put contracts together to match what Gallinari makes to make the trade eligible. He is getting like 17 per year once his extension kicks in.

I think Lyles/Booker is close enough to be valid for Chandler, but not for Gallinari (besides the point though because he would cost more, unless he gets another major injury, and if that's the case I wouldn't want him).

Covington hasn't played a minute of meaningful basketball in his NBA career and is a terribly inefficient player inside the 3pt line. I struggle to concede his a better shooter after 1 year of shooting it well form deep. He is also a good deal lankier and less athletic than Chandler, from what I've seen. Not sure he can handle backup 4 minutes as well as Chandler.
